Play Kitchens

For those of you who bought play kitchens for your LOs when they were under 2, how long have/did they play with them?  We want to get DS one for Christmas and I'm trying to decide how much of a splurge it should be. He loves the one they have a daycare, but (and I know all kids are different) if he's going to be bored with it a year from now, I don't want to spend a lot of money on one (i.e., trying to decide if we go with a plastic one in the $50-$75 range or "splurge" on a plastic one with more bells and whistles or a wood one in the $100-$200 range). TIA!

Re: Play Kitchens

  • We bought one last year when he was 23 months. He actually didn't play with it very much until a couple months after he turned 2. Now he plays with it several times a day, every day. We have the IKEA kitchen, pots and pans, and utensils, and M&D and Green Toys play food.

  • We have the white KidKraft with a bunch of M&D food and cooking supplies. It still gets played with probably more than any toy in the house. We bought it in December 2011.

  • DD is almost 4 and still plays with it. She plays with it even more when she has friends over. Her 8 year old brother even plays with it with her. I think they are a good investment and it gives you ideas for gifts from others (play food, dishes etc.)
  • My girls got one for Christmas. DD1 was almost 3 and DD2 was 16 months. They have played with it every single day since then, and I don't see that stopping any time soon. As a kid, I remember my sisters and I playing with ours until we were each at least 6 or 7.

We have the same brand stuff and bought it the same year.

DD loves it.  I think it's a classic toy that will get used for years to come.  DS is still pretty small, but even he enjoys going through the basket of M&D food!
  • DS got one for Christmas just before he turned two. At five, he still plays with it with his little sister.

We have the same one.  He got it for his 2nd birthday and has played with it pretty much daily since then.  We also have two little girls who will also play with it once they are big enough.  Free shipping on Amazon made it so worth it, and it wasn't much over $100.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • We bought one last year--it gets played with a few times a week. It is in the basement with the bigger toys--so unless we go down there, she doesn't play with it. And of course, she still isn't at the age where I can leave her to play there. So when we are home, and I am doing things (laundry, cooking, cleaning etc) we don't get down to the basement much.

She does love it when we go there.

  • I got one from CL when he was about 18 months old. He's still enjoying it! He will be 3 in November.

I would get a sturdy but not $$$$ one and splurge on food, quality bake sets, utensils, etc. I think that is what keeps his interest!
  • Thank you everyone!  I'm so glad to hear this is a toy that kids love for many years!
