Toddle-Proofing Potted Plants

All our potted plants are outside for the summer, but it just occurred to me that I have no idea what to do with them when winter comes now that we'll have a mobile tiny human in the house. I usually put them on the floor in the kitchen beneath a big picture window, but that is DS's favorite spot to watch the dogs now. What do you do with your plants to protect them from LO's and vice versa?

Re: Toddle-Proofing Potted Plants

  • Surprisingly DD could care less about the potted plants. We have two in the entry way and she will stop and look at them and just keep going. I would put them in a place lo doesn't frequent a lot but other than that, just wait and see!

  • We have ours behind furniture (chairs, side tables) where it is hard for them to get to them.  They occasionally still do get back there but it takes some effort and time so they usually get caught during the attempt.  :)

  • We moved ours to a room he isn't allowed in. I hope to be able to move them back out soon now that he is starting to understand boundaries.
  • My mom has a ton of potted plants.  The ones that are too big to go "up" just stay where they are.  With every grandchild (C is number 5!), she reteaches the concept of leaving the plants alone. Generally it's a month or so of dirt on the floor every once in a while, but no serious damage was ever done.

  • Thanks for the ideas, ladies! I think we'll put them in a room where he has limited access so that I can teach him to leave them alone but don't have to work on it every single day.
