question about water breaking

No; not mine - I promise I'm not looking for a diagnosis.

At our birthing class and in much of the literature that has overflowed our house, it has been stated that many if not most women don't have their water break /as a sign of/before labor. Seems to me that a good number of the stories I am reading here the water broke before labor.

For all of you recent mamas/STM's; what is/are your experience(s) on this? (For the record, any time I do anything requiring any effort, my husband gives me the side-eye and mutters ominously "you're going to break your water..!!" What, doing dishes???)

Loving the sweet baby pics, by the way!

Re: question about water breaking

  • Since you posted an awesome gif, I will answer your question. :D

When mine broke I felt/heard a pop. I was in the process of laying down when it happened. Immediately I got back up and ran to the bathroom and sat on the toilet. The stuff that came out was a combination of clear, water-like fluid and clear, viscous mucus. It came in sporadic gushes after that throughout the rest of the day anytime i would move. It felt exactly like I was peeing myself each time (but I knew my bladder was empty because I had gone to the bathroom 30 seconds before my bag broke).

I hope that answers your question!

I'm an unusual one I guess....just had my third and my water broke first with all of them, in bed at various times of the night.   My labor started within minutes with my first two (39w) but this last one was unfortunately only at 36w1d (we're still in NICU at a week old) and my labor did not start on its own. I used castor oil the next day to get labor started. I have no idea why it broke, but my baby didn't signal it, I believe, because his lungs weren't quite ready.
  • Mine broke at 3 am after I went to bed at 1. I wasn't feeling any contractions beforehand, so that was the first sign to me. However, I'm sure it's possible that I had contractions earlier and just didn't feel them. I definitely felt them after it broke though!

  • I was in labor most the day when my first water broke. I thought id peef myself.

  • My water broke while peeing. I actually heard a pop after I peed. I wasn't sure if I was imagining it, so I went downstairs to tell dh and then I felt a little trickle that dampened my underwear. Still unsure, I changed them and went upstairs to call the dr. By the time I got upstairs, they were damp again. Then while talking to the doctor, I felt strange, rushed to the bathroom, and just barely made it before there was a large gush of clear fluid that ran down my legs and all over the bathroom floor. I didn't start having contractions until a couple hours later, but the leaking fluid never stopped once it started.

With DD they broke my water in the hospital and with DS it broke at 10cm when they were trying to start my spinal for a csec. They had to put me under because there was no longer time for a spinal (DSs feet were coming out already)

  • With DD mine was broken for me immediately prior to pushing. The doctor said he didn't want it to burst all over him. I feel he should have left it alone and that DD probably would have been born in the caul.

Time will tell what will happen with this one.

I have one IRL friend whose water broke prior to labor. Everyone else had their water broken at some point during their hospital labor.

  • With my last pregnancy, my water starting leaking as we walked into the hospital. I was fully dilated when I arrived. But the midwife broke it as I was pushing. DH said there was a lot of fluid. I wasn't really paying attention. I'm now overdue, and boy to I wish cleaning would nudge labor or break my water. The other day at the grocery store I went to pick up a case of soda and thought, "Hmm, should I be doing this?" Then I realized the worst that cold happen was my water would break and/or I'd go into labor. I lifted it myself. If I thought it would've helped, I'd have moved the entire soda section one case at a time.

  • My water broke 10 days early last pregnancy with no warning.

I actually think I'm in the midst of early labor now and my water hasn't broken. I guess each time is different!
  • With ds my water broke as I was waddling down my hallway. It was 1030 at night and I had been having timetable contractions all of the afternoon.

I felt a small pop followed by a small gush. And then just a slow leak. I was 40 weeks and 6 days. Just like I am TODAY! Hoping!!!

  • I had contractions all day then real painful contractions that came right on top of each other. When I got to the hospital they checked me right away and she said my bag of waters was right there so she didn't wanna mess around too much but guessed I was 8 cm.. She called in another nurse who came in checked and said the same thing, she said my urge to push was bc the bag of waters was right there but once that broke baby would be right Behind.. Sure enough 2 min later a big gush and it broke I was like eww my water broke lol and then about 10 min later he was born.. With my first they had to break it in the hospital after labor started
  • With both of my kids the doctor broke my water when I was already in labor. With DD at 6 cm and with DS at 10 cm when I was ready to push.
  • My water broke at home. I actually went to the bathroom to pee but before I could go there was a gush of fluid. It definitely felt different from going pee and it was clear fluid so I knew. When getting ready to go to the hospital I had a couple more small gushes of fluid.

  • I woke up from a nap and felt a gush of water. I thought I peed my pants so I changed my pad laid down for 30 mins and got up and felt another gush. That's when I knew it was my water.
  • My water broke at 1am I felt the urge to go pee but I was too lazy to do so so by the time I got up to pee it was 1:05 my underwear was soaked I though "man I pee on myself" but once I starred dripping and it was sticky I woke my mom to ask she said "call LandD to let them know we are on our way" I didn't diliate or did I have contraction. Piticiion was given to me at 3:30pm contractions started 30 minutes after. I opened 6 cm by 8:45am by 9 it was time to push
  • With DS, I was induced. It was a slow, long process and when things finally started moving they were about to break it and it broke on its own

With DD 1, we went to the hospital bc contractions had been coming for a while and had gotten within minutes of each other. My water broke at the hospital as they were examine me, but gradually - not in a big gush

With DD 2, I was in bed debating if I was actually in labor when I felt a pop and had another gradual water break

  • I labored for 2 days at home and my water don't break. It wasn't until was 8cm at the hospital and LO's heart rate was dropping that they had to break my water to attach the internal heart monitor

  • For my first two, waters broke as first sign of labor, But last night for my #3, waters broke just before pushing. But you're right, I have a good number of friends who.have had their waters break first.
  • My water broke when I was in bed around 2 in the morning when I was 38w3d. I didn't feel any "pop" or anything--just a trickle of liquid from my vagina.  I wasn't having contractions; in fact, contractions never started on their own and had to be induced with pitocin. I actually think my body wasn't ready for labor yet, and there's a good chance I would still be pregnant today (my EDD) had my membranes not ruptured.

  • I was induced, but my water never broke. My doctor was going to break it while in labor, but I wanted to make sure the induction was going to take first. Then I progressed so fast by the time she got back I was ready to push and she broke it.

  • Mine breaking was my first sign of anything happening last time at 37wks 6 days. But I did start labor pretty quickly after it broke. It was a definite POP and gush for me. No doubts!

  • I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. A sat back on the bed after and received an absolute GUSH...I moved quickly to the toilet for another gush. Yes it was all over our floors like a trail of water...my Mom was great enough to come by during my hospital stay to clean it up. This all happened at 33.5 weeks, so I was scared to even see my bed, bedroom and bathroom again. Luckily DD is doing just fine, so now its all happy memories.

I did continue to have bursts of fluid in the car and while settling in at the hospital. It started to subside once they have me laying in bed.

And with a gush, you KNOW its not pee. Completely different feeling.
  • WIth DS1 my water didn't break until right before he was born.

With DS2 my water broke and I didn't go into labor until hours later.

FTR, I was sleeping when my water broke so I don't think it has anything to do with physical activity!
  • With DS mine broke while I was eatin dinner. It was the huge gush and I had to run to the bathroom. I was 39 weeks and 4 days, I didn't feel like I was having contractions so I waited the 24 hours ad went to L&D to be induced.. The entire time I was apparently having contractions and just didnt know of feel them until they broke a small sac of water which was still in there... Ouch

  • I was induced with DD so my OB broke my water.

With DS I had contractions for about 4 hours and then my water broke on its own.

  • Mine started leaking at 230 am and continued to leak until I went the hospital at 130 that afternoon. My contractions never got regular on their own and I was started in pitocin.
  • My water broke while I was in labor. Once I hit 4 cm my water pretty much exploded everywhere. I had been having contractions 2-3 minutes apart for hours at this point.

My water didn't break until about 67 hours into labor (8 hours before actual delivery). Mine is kind of an extreme case though.

ETA it broke while I was "sleeping"... if you can call it that... and not during the myriad of excersizes they had me doing to try and reposition baby ei; lunges squats twists etc so ditto PPs that it has nothing to do with activity

  • My water broke as I was bending over to shave in the shower - no contractions before. I swear it was the pressure that caused it, but the drs assured me that wouldn't have caused it to break.

  • Thanks for your replies, ladies. I was curious about practical experience vs. that 15% stat I kept hearing.  Interestingly, at my appointment yesterday, my Dr. brought up that many of the patients in the practice (3 of hers alone) had their water break in the last week. She said that this was not usual in her experience; not that it doesn't happen, but less often than not, and more unusual that it happened to so many at once. I'm not due for another 11 days, but I might start moving furniture by day 12...!

    Thanks for sharing!
  • Mine didn't break. I needed an internal contraction/hr monitor during the induction ( :(( ), which "broke" it, even though I never felt a gush. I think it just slowly trickled out over the next few hours.

  • My water broke at 930 pm when I was 38 weeks 2 days... It was the first sign of anything. Contractions started 3 hours later and DS was born 4 hours after that. It broke right after I peed, as I was walking back to my room. Couldn't have broken on the toilet? Big gush, drenched pants, messy carpet. Not that I cared at the time...
