Swaddle weaning help

Last night I tried no arms in his swaddle - fail. Bed at 10, up at 2, from sttn. So annoying. The bright side is that he took an hour to fall back asleep and then slept till 7:15 (usually he's up at 5 for the day). Any helpful tips on how to wean from the swaddle? He's starting to roll so it's gotta happen soon..

We decided to just go cold turkey- swaddle free. The first night she woke up one more time than usual, but now she is back to sleeping from about 7:30-5:30. She kicks off her blankets now so we usually have to go tuck her back in. We tuck the sides of the blankets into the sides of the crib, and we have her back on half of the blanket then fold the other half over her so she does not have lose blankets floating around the crib.

I would say give tonight another shot doing what you did, LO might just need to adjust to the change but sounds like a good start!

  • When your LO woke up did you feed her? I tried just soothing back to bed, but it turned into whaling so I changed him and gave a bottle. I'm worried that he will get used to the feeding again. Hopefully it was just to pacify him and get him sleeping (praying it was!) he only drank a little bit so I know he wasn't truly hungry. Maybe I will try again tonight. I'll have to psych myself up :)
  • We also went cold turkey with the girls. We had swaddle sleep sacks (because I'm crazy and was convinced they'd break out of the swaddle and then have a potentially loose blanket near their faces) and they usually tried to break their arms out anyway. One night DH and I decided just to let them have their arms out and they were fine. Still sleeping through the night, which they have been since mid June. I use Aden and Anais sleep sacks though, because as be mentioned before, loose blankets scare me, and this way we don't have to tuck them in no stop.

  • We went to the Magic Sleepsuit because LO is a mess unswaddled but was breaking out of them all. His hands are still my nemesis when trying to get him to sleep but the thickness of the suit keeps his hands a little quieter during the night.

Yes, when DD woke up we changed and fed her. She did not eat as much as usual, just a little late night snack :) She is kind of a light eater anyways and fed on demand so it did not throw off any type of feeding schedule.

  • At first we swaddled him with one arm out and he seemed to do good with that. It's been a few weeks since then and we've noticed every time we checked on him while he's sleeping he's managed to get his other hand out of the swaddle. We took it as a sign that he's ready for both arms out so this week we've swaddled him with both arms out and his sleeping hasn't changed all which is great. Still sleeps with bottom half swaddled though.
  • Update: night #2 with both arms out he's back to sttn, 9:30-6:30 (even a little longer than usual) its 6:30 and he's awake, sucking on his hands (normally he'd be crying to be picked up). Thanks for all the tips, you guys motivated me to keep at it.
  • We haven't started weaning DS3 from the swaddle yet, but I know it's coming soon.  We weaned both of the older boys gradually, doing 1 arm out, then both, then a Halo sleepsack.  The sleepsack replaced the sleep signal that swaddle had been, and provided some confinement to help with the adjustment.
