Pumping Advice/Opinions?

Currently, I am breastfeeding our 5 wk olds during the day and bottle-feeding breastmilk at night w/ hubby. We usually have 7 feedings per 24 hrs, and I am pumping 5-6 of those (2 only pumping, the others pump after nursing) and freezing extra milk. I am wondering a few things...

-What would I ever use the frozen milk for? I am not going back to work. I could see maybe if we went skiing for a day or something, but that would be really rare. And I'm running out of freezer space already. (I would be happy to donate, but the time commitment and sometimes watching my boys scream while I pump is stressful)
-I guess I'm overproducing, so if I start skipping more pumping sessions, am I really jeopardizing my supply?
-How many times per day is reasonable?

I'd love any advice or opinions.

  • You might also decide to cut out pumping sessions and can use those for night when you do so! I EPd and ended up using my milk all up when I quit at 10 mos, and never had to buy formula really which was nice (I did supplement with samples I had).

  • I exclusively pumped until 7 months and I had a huuuge freezer stash which I built up in the beginning.  Around 5-6 months my supply dipped a tiny bit and my girls started eating more so I had to dig into my stash.  By the time I weaned off pumped I had completely gone through my stash, so it came in handy.
  • With my first, I pumped and nursed. I tried to have a good frozen stash even though I didn't go back to work. It was good to have when I was out without the baby. It gave DH a chance to feed her and have that bonding, and eventually when she weaned herself from the breast, she still got breast milk for a few weeks.

  • So what is a good stash? At 5 weeks I probably have 200-250 ounces.
  • I built up a stash of around 1000oz (crazy, yes) -- but my output plateaued at 50oz a day from pumping. And, around 4 months adjusted, the girls started taking in more than that. As a result, we've been able to go exclusively BM still...and I have maybe 4 weeks left before we have to supplement. I was always of the opinion that more is always better if you're willing to deal with it. But, that's just me -- I had SUCH a hard time getting my supply up, so that's probably why I felt that way (and in hindsight, it worked out for us).
