Parenting after a Loss

Would this be weird?

So, I have about 20oz of pumped BM in my fridge from a few days ago.. DS2 can't drink my BM.. I don't know what I have in my diet (I had been dairy free for 3 weeks), but something makes his belly SO upset and gassy and he does nothing but scream.. so, he's not getting it.  I said to my DH.. would it be weird to give it to DS1 in a sippy cup?  I mean, we give him whole milk in a sippy.. it's not like I'm putting him to the breast for it.. it's just, pumped milk sitting in our fridge.. I just would hate to throw it away :(  DH says yes, it's weird to give it to DS1 since he only had BM for the first week or so of his life.. Boo for throwing out pumped milk.. that was hours of sleep I sacrificed to get that!! Especially when I was only getting 2oz at a time!! That's 10 pump sessions right there!  Ho hum.. oh well I guess.

Re: Would this be weird?

  • Was there a reason DS1 was only on BM for the first week of his life? If it wasn't due to an allergy or anything that could upset his stomach, then I don't really see a problem with it.

Maybe try doing 25/75 BM/WCM to start and see how it goes?

  • No.. he was a NICU baby, and I was pumping while he was still in the hospital, but with all the chaos of everything, I wasn't really producing much, and the NICU docs wouldn't release him until he was taking x amount of ounces per feed, etc.. and then when we got home, I tried nursing him, but we couldn't get him to latch.. it was one of those nurse for 30 minutes then feed a bottle then pump for 30 minutes, etc.. we ended up scrapping it.. he did have a milk allergy (found out later after on formula), but he has no issues drinking milk now?  I don't know.. for all I know he'd not even drink it if I offered it to him.. I just feel like BM is liquid GOLD, lol!  Maybe I'll freeze it and try slipping it into DS2's bottles a little at a time when he's a bit older?  Or, I'll dump it.  We'll see.

  • If there was no medical reason (ie allergy) he couldn't be on BM, then go for it to give it to DS1.  You might want to do a mix (ie 75% WCM & 25%BM) so there isn't an abrupt change in taste, but I'd totally give it to my DS rather than toss it.  There are so many antibodies and such in it, it's good for him!  Andplusalso, you worked your butt off to get all that BM.  Use it!

  • Not weird, but if your DH isn't cool with it, I don't think you should. I know how heartbreaking it will be to dump all that hard worked for milk :(

  • I was getting ready to say it was weird, expecting DS1 to be like 3 or something, but then looked at your ticker.  He is still a peanut himself!  I don't think it would be weird at all.  W.H.O suggests BFing to 2, so like PP said, maybe do a mix?

  • LOL I asked my sister what she thought and she completely said that was gross and I should just toss it.. so, down the drain it shall go.. I plan to pour myself a glass of wine after I toss it! Sigh.  Why is breastfeeding such an emotional thing!  I swear, I have beat myself up more over the inability to BF my children than any other parental challenge!  Ho hum...!

  • No! Don't toss it!!!!!!

Obviously your DH and sister have some weird hang ups about breast feeding which may or may not have contributed to the lack of success the first time.

But it is liquid gold. I keep some pumped in the freezer for toddler DD when she gets a cold/flu/etc. It is tons more healthy for DS1 than cow's milk. Cows milk=made for cows. Human milk=made for humans.

But if you still can't get over the mental hurdle even though science tells you to give it to DS1 then search on Facebook for "human milk for human babies". There, a desperate momma would be more than willing to take it off your hands so she can give it to her baby or toddler.

I wouldn't throw it away either!  Honestly, even though I would heavily still consider your DH's opinion - I would still try to change it ;)  But if he's honestly dead set against it (even with a ratio mixed with regular milk), then I'd suggest donating it too ~ a grateful Mama will thankfully accept the gift of BM <3

I have often wondered this myself. I would be bawling dumping that out.

  • don't toss it!  MH had the same hang ups so I just gave it to DS when MH wasn't around (I had extra at one time or a couple weeks), No biggie.  I would practically rather drink it myself than pour milk down the drain!
LOL I actually thought that last night!!! I still didn't chuck it.. I just couldn't bring myself to dump it, LOL! But, it's been 5 days in the fridge so I gotta do something with it soon.. maybe I'll try mixing it with DS's milk while DH is at work tomorrow... especially now that I think DS has the chicken pox!!! UGH!  The more immunity the better!

  • Totally not gross. If you can't make a decision by tonight, I'd put it in the freezer until you can make a decision. If you decide not to give it to your children, I like the donation idea. (Even if you were to put your 13 month old to the breast, it wouldn't be weird. Not for everyone, but not weird.)

  • Gave some to DS1 tonight mixed with WCM.. can I just tell you, he gulped down the whole sippy, when normally we have to fight with him to drink half of it!! Psh, to you, DH!! Looks like DS1 LIKES my milk!!  And, DH ended up being fine with it.. he's usually pretty good about "giving in" to things that I'm determined on ;-)
