Prednisone and Pregnancy

edited August 2013 in January 2014 Moms
Has anyone else had to take prednisone while pregnant?
I had asthma as a child and it came back with a vengeance when I got pregnant.
I started a 10 day dose of 10 mg a day back when I was about 12 weeks, and then had to start another round at 15 weeks (I'm now 16w4d) and my doctor wants me on it for another 10 days.
I'm a little anxious.

Re: Prednisone and Pregnancy

  • Hi. Yes! Me. I had to take very high doses of prednisone with my first due to Hemolytic Anemia I developed around 20 weeks. I took about 80mg a day for the entire second 1/2 of my pregnancy and was worried and stressed about it the entire time.

But...my darling son was the model of health when he was born and still is today. I sometimes even wonder if he is so healthy because the predisone (steroid) helped boost his immune system. He he :)

I know how you feel but do not worry one bit, you and your baby will be just fine!

  • Thank you so much, that is so reassuring!
    Your baby is gorgeous!
  • I am currently on prednisone for low platelets. I've been on prednisone for a year - my highest amount being 90 mg a day, but since I've been pregnant no more than 5 mg. doctors are not concerned and I don't think a few weeks on it will affect the baby at all. And my siggy is all messed up...but I'm 20 1/2 weeks.

  • Prednisone is not a great drug in pregnancy, but it's way safer than uncontrolled asthma.

However, you also need to be on a daily inhaled steroid.  Those are very safe in pregnancy, and should prevent the flare-ups.  If your doctor hasn't mentioned it, then he's very out of date when it comes to asthma treatment, and you need to see a specialist.  It's probably best to start with a plain steroid like Flovent or Qvar, rather than a combination inhaler.

Without my inhaled steroid, I don't think I'd ever have considered the risk of pregnancy!
  • Thanks, Jane. I am on a steroid inhaler as well.
It never occurred to me that my asthma would come back during pregnancy. I have had very few issues with it since I was about 17, but apparently I'm in the 1/3 of women who's asthma worsens during pregnancy.
  • Mine was pretty bad a couple years ago.  I'd planned to try to get pregnant back in late 2010, but then I had all the breathing issues, and I had to do a bunch of stuff to get it under control, including allergy shots. This year, though, so far so good.

Be aware, acid reflux can irritate the lungs, and pregnancy can cause or worsen acid reflux.  If this might be happening with you, there are various possible solutions.

The other thing I've noticed is that, with the baby using some of my lung capacity, even the small asthma attacks are more burdensome.  So, I'm just extra careful outside, and if I'm feeling tight, I walk very slowly.
