Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Night Terrors

Hello,

My LO (for the last several weeks) tosses and turns a whole lot while sleeping and will frequently wake up crying- like out of dead sleep to full blown crying!! I asked his pediatrician about this and she said its probably night terrors.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does this go away?

Re: Night Terrors

  • We've been dealing with it for a while. Pedi recommended going into his room about an hour to 90 minutes after putting him down and lightly jostling him without waking him. It supposedly disrupts the sleep cycle so that it skips the night terror. We've had mixed results with it.

I had night terrors as a toddler and eventually outgrew them. It bothers mom and dad more than it bothers baby.

  • We dealt with it from about 6 months to 1 year and they became predictable on the days where he didn't get enough sleep through naps. If he was overtired, it was a guaranteed night terror night for us. Back then, I reimplemented a 3rd nap and they went away except for days where he didn't sleep well. Obviously 3 naps isn't in the cards anymore, but I'd start by looking at the possibility of being overtired (and btw, my little man didn't act overtired AT ALL during the day but he definitely was. It was so confusing and frustrating).

Then, when he did have one, we actually just left him because interfering made it far worse and normally actually woke him up (they're actually asleep during a night terror). We have a webcam so we'd watch him there to make sure he was safe and just let it run the course and they'd typically wrap themselves up within a minute or two, 5-10 mins max.

  • We deal with them over here too, when he gets over-tired i can pretty much guarantee a night terror, the best thing you can do is not talk to them just kind of hang back and make sure they don't hurt themselves, the more you try to wake them up the longer they last, it's heart breaking but since learning that things have been much easier for us..good luck
