traveling and where to sleep

in Toddlers: 24 Months+
we are driving from ohio to savannah nin a few months and ds might be out of his crib by then. everytime we travel he sleeps in his playpen, which he is almost too big for.. should I try to find a bigger/deeper one he cant climb out of or...?! I have no clue what or where he would sleep away from home if he is too big for the playpen!! what does everyone use?! thanks!

    We have not had to do this yet, but what about a sleeping bag on the floor?

    I can tell you that when DD2 was 23 months, she slept on an air mattress one week and on a twin bed against the wall with a bedrail the next week.  She did better on the actual bed.  DD1 was easier.  At that age, she would sleep with me just fine and then transition back to her bed at home with no problems.  When she was a little over 2, we put her in a sleeping bag on the floor and she did great.  We just tried that with DD2 this summer and she did okay too (and she's a crappy sleeper).  I would not invest in a different crib type thing that may or may not work.  I also was never comfortable trying the toddler cots they sell.  I did see a toddler air mattress at Walmart last week that I may have tried when mine were littler https://www.walmart.com/ip/Intex-Toddler-Airbed-Tan/22899906.

    I purchased a twin air mattress that has an extra air chamber that makes rails on each side of the crib.  It wasn't listed as toddler sized and it holds a grown adult so we could use it for several years to come.  I ordered it from Amazon.

    My girls usually sleep in sleeping bags on the floor when we travel. They think it's fun ;)

    We've taken DD1's bedrail with us to attach to a bed (when it's possible for her to have her own bed). We've also used an air mattress on the floor, which she loved.

    Just got back from NYC. Ds was ok in the hotel crib, much to my surprise. I did pull him into our bed though. Also if we could have gotten 2 beds I would have just slept with him. He's allllll about sleeping with mommy right now though.

    DD uses a sleeping bag on the floor too.
