First ultrasound: vaginal or abdominal?

I will have my first ultrasound on Wednesday at 7w2d. I know this is early for what some doctors do. Should I expect a transvaginal ultrasound or an abdominal? I have had a transvaginal before to look for cysts and it wasn't really pleasant. I've also had a decent amount of days where I was spotting since I got pregnant, so I'm not excited about bleeding more because of this either. Just wondering what to expect. Putting a big stick inside your hooha does not create as many fuzzy memories as putting gel on your tummy! Thanks!

Re: First ultrasound: vaginal or abdominal?

  • Typically it is transvaginal , it was for me especially since I have a little more padding around my midsection but since that is early the idea behind the vaginal ultrasound is they can get a closer look at the developing baby. I agree with you though it isn't pleasant at all, I had a twin pregnancy and one didn't have a HB so they sent me across the hall for a more detailed scan and the tech had to make sure all my part were there. Apparently my right ovary sits higher and to the side more than my left and she was trying to turn that wand all sorts of ways I finally said" lady it's a straight path up there there are no right turns" she was really hurting me with that thing! Good luck to you and congrats on your baby!!

  • I had a scan at 7wks 1day & it was a abdominal one. I was fully expecting the other but was pleasantly surprised :o). Hope it's the same for you & congrats!! X
  • I had my first one at 6 weeks, 4 days. She first tried abdominally, but then had to switch to transvaginal to get a better picture. Good luck!

  • With my first I expected Transvag but got abdominal! I was 7w3d and you could see the sac and a blob with a fluttering heartbeat!! Pretty neat!
  • I went at 7w 1 day and I had both. I think she wanted to give me the abdominal one first just to show me the baby as soon as possible and the heartbeat. The transvaginal one was so not a big deal. This is my first so I was nervous, but I was just in awe of seeing the baby on the screen I did not care what she was doing down there! Also, it was not painful at all, and the wand is not that big. I feel like it looks much scarier in movies lol! Good luck!
  • oh btw, ask for pictures if you want them! She printed out 3 for me, and I just gave one to my mother in a frame yesterday to announce our pregnancy. She can't stop looking at it :)
  • I've had what seems like hundreds of transvaginal u/s and the pregnancy ones are a breeze compared to the other ones. I think it's because they are looking at your uterus so they don't typically have to poke around and look for your ovaries. You should be fine! Good luck!

  • I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks. They tried abdominal and got some pics, but then to get a better view we did a transvaginal ultrasound. It really wasn't bad at all. I just wish they would have told me that spotting is normal after a transvaginal ultrasound.

  • I had my first at 6w0d - transvaginal. I had another at 9w4d that was also transvaginal.

  • Mine at 8w4d was transvaginal. It didn't hurt at all. The speculum for the Pap smear is way more uncomfortable. I didn't spot at all afterwards either.
  • I had one last week (6 weeks 5 days) and she did ab first and then vaginal.  I had the same tech a couple months ago for u/s to look for cysts and she was really nice and very gentle even though I have very high ovaries.  It was uncomfortable, but not painful.
  • I was scheduled for a transvaginal but they did it abdominally at 7w5d. With DD at the same time it was transvaginally.
