NWMR: front loaders with no pedestals?

We re-did our laundry room and will have front loaders, with no pedestals, and a counter on top. We really wanted the counter space. My mom thinks that I will hate not having the pedestals and will find it uncomfortable bending down all the time. WDYT? Anyone have them without the pedestals?

Re: NWMR: front loaders with no pedestals?

  • I had this set up in my old house and I love, love, LOVED it.  It is one of the things I truly miss about our old house.  The bending over is no different than your old dryer, so it's not something you have to get used to.  You are going to love having the counter space for folding without having to worry about losing a sock in between the W&D.  Oh man, I'm so jealous!

  • I don't have pedestals and haven't missed them at all
  • Going on 9 years with no pedestals, I even have recurring back pain and have yet to curse the day we didn't shell out for pedestals.
  • I don't have pedastals, and although I don't like front loading washers, that's not really why. (I feel like I can't tell when it is appropriately full). We've only lived here for a month though so I'll get used to it eventually!

We had pedestals and didn't like them. Got rid of them on Craigslist and much happier so I think you'll be fine. Jealous of the counter space!!!
  • I don't have pedestals so nothing to miss. I don't mind.

  • I agree- the space on top was more important to me than the drawer or whatever they put below & bending to put the wash in... we don't have a full counter (that would be great b/c stuff still falls behind sometimes) but I don't regret not getting the pedestals at all.
Also we have cabinets above ours and if we had gotten pedestals I would never have been able to reach the bottom shelf of the cabinet w/ out a stool b/c I'm short and that would be serious annoying since that is where we keep the detergent, stain spray, etc.
  • I am going to be the opposing view. I did not get them when we first got our machines. I hated it. The next Christmas MIL got them for us. I am so happy. I do think I would like the counter, but I would have hated bending. I am still able to use the top to help fold. Height might also factor in. I am 5'9, but my sister who is 5'1, does not have them and loves it what way.

  • I inherited a front-load with no pedestals 5 years ago and haven't noticed any extra inconvenience.   Like PP said, it's no different than putting clothes into the dryer.  Also, of all the things I have to worry about, bending down to change over a load of laundry is at the very bottom of my list.  I totally would have chosen the extra counter space.

  • I don't have pedestals and I really don't notice the bending down being difficult. Perhaps your mom is forgetting that the parents of small children bend down approximately 100 bazillion times per day, anyway.

  • Yay, thanks! She had me all freaked out about it.

  • We stacked them, so no pedestals.  It is nice to have the extra room!

  • We just got them and don't have pedestals.  I have noticed sometimes I have to really reach to get a stray sock stuck in the back but I wouldn't call it a problem.

How are you installing the counter top? I would love to put a counter over mine.

  • We didn't have them at first but I got irritated. SO DH built some, we did not want to spend $$ for ones from the store. It is the best thing and I love them - wish the one for the dryer was a little taller. I would not have bought them if DH couldn't have made one though.

  • No issues here and I even sometimes have back problems.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • We have a front loading washer (which I actually hate but I won't go off on that and hijack your post! :-) ) without pedestals and it doesn't bother me at all to bend down - it's not like I'm doing 5 loads of laundry a day.  Two, maybe three times a week I do a load of laundry. I can handle bending for that.  We have a small laundry room so the space on top is very valuable for folding and storing laundry baskets.  But, if we had a larger laundry room that had a separate counter, I can see pedestals being worth it.

  • We stacked ours and addd cabinets, counter and laundry cabinets underneath. Love it. Tons of stoage and room to fold, etc
