Re: Dear Etsy.

  • Saw this and thought "perfection" for the space-theme nursery. Then saw the price tag ($80?!). Hello registry ;)

Heh don't even get me started on the ones from this seller. $85+ with the average at around $125!! DH would be pissed if I ordered them haha.

But yeah OP I know what you mean. There are so many things on Etsy I want to buy but I just can't justify the costs sometimes.

Especially when you know it was $20 to make..

  • I'm a seller on Etsy and locally for my crafts.  I wouldn't charge THAT much!  I crochet baby stuff (blankets, hats, booties, etc).  I was asked to crochet a baby headband with a BIG flower on it.  I told her that it would cost $8-$10 depending on which flower she wanted (one flower was MUCH bigger and had more expensive yarn to create it).  The lady got pissed off and said I was charging WAY too much when she could buy a headband at Walmart for $5.  Yeah, well mine is hand crafted!  And I have to make it!

But I see why you guys get frustrated.  Some people charge outrageous prices.

Those are too stinking cute! Can you post a link to them?
  • I have not shopped on Etsy yet, apparently, I'm missing out!!
  • But yeah OP I know what you mean. There are so many things on Etsy I want to buy but I just can't justify the costs sometimes.

If it only costs $20, why don't you make them?  I'm guessing it's because you either don't have the skill or you don't have the time. The person who created these has both, and she has the right to decide how much her skill and her time are worth.

These kind of comments really bother me. When you are doing handcrafted products like this, you can decide how much your time is worth. And the buyer can decide whether or not the cost is worth the product.  If you don't think it's worth the price, IMO, you have three options -- let it go, find something else to buy in a store, or make it yourself.
  • I totally understand the idea peanut but it's a though niche you make for yourself as someone who wants to sell their goods when they're incredibly over priced. But if I really wanted something hand crafted it'd just make me look harder for a seller that didn't price so high.

With my $20 comment I was addressing the mobiles specifically. There just wasn't much to them for $150.

Yet she has 172 buyers with 100% positive feedback. I guess some people (other than me) disagree with you.

Not that I would buy these particular mobiles -- I don't really like them. :) And I would actually make something like this if it was what I wanted.

I agree!  When you buy something cute from Target or Wal-Mart, I guarantee it costs pennies to make - I don't begrudge Target their profit on that item if it was something that I wanted.  And in the case of Etsy, I'd way rather an Etsy seller earn the profit :)

  • I shop on Etsy quite often... it's not cheap but I love getting personalized stuff and getting exactly what I want.

For the baby I'm getting new knobs for the dresser in our colours, decals in out colours, curtains for the room, and I bought the electronic version of a picture that I will print myself for the room as well.

While I can find cheaper options for all of the items, I am willing to pay to get exactly what I want (and some crafts that I have the skill to do at home I am).

I actually was able to find the same curtains as I wanted elsewhere, but they were the cheapest on Etsy, go figure. For the picture I probably could have recreated it myself, but at $12 it wasn't worth the hour or so it would take me to make a less perfect version.

I don't judge those who can't cough up that much dough but I love it! I used Etsy for my wedding a lot as well, everything from the centerpieces to my clutch.

As a knitter i can see why these are $60. They made with tiny yarn and tiny stitched. It most likely takes her (even an expert knitter) forever to knit one. She is charging for the time it takes to make them. The plus side is the smaller tighter stitched would age better. For what it is, I do not think they are over priced at all!

  • The stuffed animals I can totally rationalize because I know I've never seen it anywhere and can't knit to save my life.. I'm pretty frugal but if I want it bad enough I'll pay it. I also believe looking at it further it was a set of 2, and at $30 a piece it's not outrageous.

  • I'm surprised at how much people pay for things on Etsy. Buying handmade is an awesome trend that I'm loving. I started out selling my frames for $20 each, and now they sell for $43-$55 plus shipping, $25 to the UK for example. That's $68 for one frame, which sounds crazy to me, but hand crafted, and personalized with their name. People in US pay $55 on average, but as a friend was saying, at a store just a regular frame could cost that much. Attached is a pic to show what I'm talking about. Anyway, this isn't baby related so I'll post my favorite nursery splurge next!

Not on Etsy, but I splurged on these letters. I thought they were way better than others I could make, and worth it at the time. DH about flipped because they were over $100.

I'm not surprised, actually. It's hard to find exactly what you want for things like this. Let alone having them personalized.
  • This could be wrong but I totally peruse Etsy to get ideas for things to make for LO. I'm pretty crafty; I sew, crochet, knit, and I can paint/ glue with the best of them. One thing I probably WILL purchase from Etsy though is fabric. I can't seem to find just what I'm looking for in stores but have bee noble to find it there. I also like to buy personalized stuff, i.e. my planner, E's birthday outfits, stationary, stuff I can't make, from Etsy.

But Etsy can get super expensive and I'll be doing 2 rooms at the same time.

  • Our LO's nursery is black and white themed, and I searched everywhere for a plain, black crib skirt. I guess black isn't a popular color for babies, as I had no luck at the major chain stores. Luckily, I found one on Etsy, for the awesome price of $32. It was the first purchase I had every made on Etsy, so I was hesitant, but it arrived on time, and it was even ironed and packaged extremely well! I am a huge fan now!

Thank you times a million! I will definitely be stalking her page too!
  • Love Etsy! Love handcrafted products! I could easily see the $60 of labour and supplies. Remember these are made in small scale. Not huge factories. I love that the money goes to small artists trying to make a living. Nothing against the big stores but price is justifiable under circumstances!
  • So damn cute. I want them!

  • I have actually ordered from the ToadandLily store on Etsy, and I am VERY pleased.  They are not overly expensive. I live in a po-dunk town, and it is extremely difficult to find cute nursery decor.  I will definitely order from them again!
