Transition to sleep sack/teething

I feel like I'm back to the first couple weeks of my LO's life. He is waking up every few hours but I am not sure if it is because he is breaking out of his swaddle, because he is hungry or because he is teething. I have the miracle blanket along with countless other swaddles but DS breaks out of every single one. So, I am trying to transition him to the sleep sacks. I have started with one arm out and the end result: waking every 2.5-3 hrs. However, I can't tell if he's waking because he's broke out of the swaddle or because something else is wrong. I say he's teething because he is super fussy all day long. He is drooling like crazy and chomping at his hands. And DH and I both swear we see what looks like teeth trying to make its way out. I also feel like DS is hungry. He is 14 weeks old and weighs 16+ lbs. the doc cleared him for oatmeal if he started waking every few hours again at night (he was sleeping 7-9 hrs a night) I just can't read his mind. Should I keep going with the transition to see if he's just fussy because he's tired and waking up at night because he's not swaddled? (I usually have to nurse him back to bed though because he's frantic to eat) or is it a combo of that and his teeth?. I'm tired, baby's tired, we just need a solution or suggestions. TIA

Re: Transition to sleep sack/teething

  • Maybe try the oatmeal to see if that helps? Could it be 4 month sleep regression a little early? Whatever it is, hopefully it ends soon and LO goes back to sttn. Good luck!

  • I was thinking 4 month sleep regression also. He could be an early teether, too.

My LO is 14 weeks and we're going through the same thing. He used to sleep at least 6 hours straight, 7 on average. He is also showing signs of teething. He's been waking up once or twice a night for the past week. I even gave him Tylenol last night because he was extra fussy during his last feeding before bed and didn't want to nurse, which usually he is an excellent eater. He finally fell asleep at 11:30, got up at 2:30 and 6:30. Hopefully he will go back down for a couple more hours. I ordered an amber necklace that should arrive today. I'm really hoping it helps!

My only advice is to try swaddling him again and see if he sleeps better. If he does, maybe just leave him swaddled for a little longer until the teething symptoms subside, then try again without the swaddle? Is he rolling yet?

  • Well he's still swaddled with one arm out. But even when he was fully swaddled, he'd find a way to break out of it. The miracle blanket and all. He's just so strong. I would totally keep him swaddled because I know he's tired too, but no type of swaddle is actually keeping him swaddled.
  • And he rolls to a side but not completely over yet.
  • I know you probably would hate to buy another sleep gimmick kind of thing, but I've had a lot of luck with the baby Merlin's magic sleepsuit. A few of us have posted about it before, I don't know if you read those or not. It's not any type of swaddle, it's a big puffy zip up suit. Because its so puffy it helps to reduce their startle reflex so they don't wake themselves up as much. It's meant to be a transitional item from swaddling. Although it's puffy and looks like it would be too hot, the inside lining helps keep them cool and the legs are open at the feet to help with ventilation. LO has never been sweaty in it. I put him in just a onesie underneath. We used this to successfully transition him from the swing (the only place he would sleep before) to his crib. He's been successfully STTN in his crib for 2 weeks in the baby Merlin prior to this week. I really think the problems this week have been because of teething.

Oh, and my LO rolls over but he can't even come close to doing it in the sleepsuit because its so puffy. I'm glad because if he rolled in his sleep I'd probably have to rescue him because he rolls regularly from back to front but only occasionally from front to back. So my point is even if he learns to roll over soon he shouldn't be able to in the sleepsuit for a long time, so it will last awhile.
