Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Nervous for 1st vaccinations

I am a FTM and my baby girl has her 2 month appt. tomorrow-which includes her 1st round of vaccines. I am not looking forward to see her being giving shots and crying..I am also nervous for after-side effects? I hope she doesn't get a bad reaction to them....How was your baby? extra tired, fussy???

Re: Nervous for 1st vaccinations

  • My little guy was incredibly fussy the rest of the day, and he was a little fussier the following day.  I think his legs were sore.  She will be OK.  It's hard to see them in pain, but it's better than having them get a serious illness!  Have your pedi tell you what kinds of reactions to watch out for/when to call.  I think reactions to vaccines are pretty rare.

  • She was definitely sore that night and very, very fussy. Tylenol was a must. She calmed down after we gave it to her and fell asleep for the night (her vaccines were in late afterboon.)
The next day she wasn't in pain anymore but she slept A LOT. Other than the super sleepiness, she was back to her normal self.
Good luck. It is so hard to see them hurting but you will both get through it!

  • FTM not looking forward to that appt either.. I was told it would be ok to give DS infant Tylenol before hand, and again after, according to the dosage instructions..

  • I was nervous, too! My baby definitely was not herself for about 6 days, which my doctor said was fine. She ran a slight fever 2 days after the shots, and had runny poo for several days. She was fussy and wanted to be held. But now, 8 days out, she's a smiling happy baby and all is good. Don't be afraid of giving her tylenol (I use pediacare) to ease your baby's discomfort. Her thighs may hurt and she may generally not feel well for a bit. Hope all goes well!
  • My LO goes on Thursday for his. Also nervous because he takes everything really hard. :((
  • My LO gets his shots next Monday. My mom is going to hold MY hand!
  • My little man just had his first round today and he has slept all day long. When he's up he eats and goes right back to sleep. He's fussy while awake though.
  • we are doing an alternative schedule, but we did get the dtap at his 2-month appointment.

he didn't cry at all when they gave him the shot. i didn't notice any fussiness afterwards, either. he had a small lump at the injection site until about 24 hours later, but no permanent effect.

every baby is different, though- i hope your LO has as easy a time as mine did, and i hope the rest of ours go that smoothly, too!

  • My baby girl had these shots on Thursday.  She handled pretty well when she got the shots, but got fussy a couple of hours later.  I gave her Tylenol then, and she calmed down.  She was very tired for the next 3-4 days and is just now getting back to herself.  I could definitely tell her leg was hurting her because she always wants to stand up but really favored that leg with dTap shot for a few days.  She is back to her normal, smiling, high strung self today.  Good luck

  • My little guy got his first round of vaccines yesterday.  He screamed when they gave him the shots, and was slightly fussier than normal in the evening, but no fever and he slept a full 8 hours!  I think it's worse for the parents than it is for them since it only lasts a second.
  • Well she had the shots yesterday. Broke my heart because she was in such a good mood until the shots :( She screamed and cried so hard! But once we got in the car she fell asleep(it was naptime anyways) But she was extra tired last night and then got really fussy(Tylenol helped and she slept some more) No fever and today she was fine_had a longer than normal nap this morning. Glad its over-until October anyways...

Great to hear this. We have decided to only do the dtap as well. My LO has her appt. next week.

  • Can you please advise me on the alternative schedule you chose? Is it something your doctor introduced? Details please.
  • My LO was a little more tired and fussy than usual for a few hours after the appointment. We did give her Tylenol. But, my LO is a tough former NICU baby and has been through a lot worse in the past.

  • There are a couple of books with alternate schedules:

    https://www.amazon.com/The-Vaccine-Book-Decision-Parenting/dp/0316180521

    https://www.amazon.com/What-Doctor-About-Childrens-Vaccinations/dp/0446555711/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377632939&sr=1-1&keywords=what+your+doctor+may+not+tell+you+about+children's+vaccinations

We are going with one of Dr. Sears' schedules where we wait on some and space out some others, and we skipped the Hep B. We did just the Tdap and the rotavirus at the 2 month appt. and we will go back at 3 months for 2 more. DD is also taking some vitamin A and C to help with immunity as recommended by Dr. Sears.
