Can you help me with sleep? (Big long paragraph b/c I'm on my iPad :/)

Hi ladies! I haven't been here in a long time, but hope you'll be able to give a long lost friend some advice. I'm struggling with sleep issues, mostly of my own doing. Back story: I never intended to bedshare. It happened out of convenience and sleep deprivation. For the first 4 months, James slept with me at night and in his swing for naps. When I went back to work at 10 weeks I just decided to embrace bedsharing for optimal sleep. Now he is crawling, rolling, and pawing at me all night. Neither of us were sleeping well so we moved to the PNP bassinet, but when he would awaken, I'd put him in bed with me. We've never had a full night out of my bed. We've decided it's time to move to the crib. It's been rough. Here's tonight's scenario: bath and bottle at 6:30. down in the swing at 7 (getting him down drowsy into the crib doesn't work, so we figure we will tackle that part later). Transferred to crib at 7:15. Wake at 7:30 screaming. All attempts at in-crib soothing fail. Rocked back to sleep at 8. Woke at 8:30. Given a bottle which put him back to sleep in my arms. Multiple attempts at transferring into crib fail. James is now inconsolable and so is mom. Dad tries. No luck. Dad puts him into PNP (which is now converted to play pen...bassinets not safe anymore). He plays himself to sleep for about 15 min, then awake. In desperation, moved to swing where he's been sleeping ever since. I'm looking for advice with this scenario and what we could have done better. I cannot keep bedsharing and his bassinet is no longer safe. I feel hopeless.

  • Sorry mama - that sounds rough. We were having some crappy nights too involving 5-6 wake ups a night, losing the pacifier, putting it back in, nursing back to sleep, wake up screaming, etc.
We ditched the paci over a week ago and started CIO. It's like night and day - not sure if you're interesting in sleep training, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

  • Make sure to keep your same routine. Bath, bottle, bed. Put him in his crib, turn on a sound machine (if you don't have one, its worth the $20. My daughter is almost 2 and still uses one). Sometimes I have to let G cry for 10 minutes until he falls asleep. As long as you know he's tired, dry, and not hungry...crying wont hurt him, mama. I hope you figure something out soon.

  • I first got him used to the crib when he was awake. I'd put him in there with some toys and the mobile on while I was in his room putting away laundry or something. Then once we decided it was time for him to start sleeping in there, we started with one nap (his longer, afternoon nap) in the crib. After a week or so of successful naps, we started having him in there at night too. And we have been doing CIO and some nights he doesn't cry at all.
