Night feedings after 1 year

DS will turn 1 on Saturday, and he still usually nurses twice a night (sometimes 1, sometimes 3). Anyone else have an LO that does/did that many night feedings at this stage? (My first was down to 4 feedings a day by a year, DS does 7.)

I would really love to get him down to a consistent 1 (or none, obviously) per night. I don't plan to wean at 12 months, but I would like to cut back a little. And the MOTN feedings seem like a logical place to start. I don't want him to try to make up for a cut daytime session at night.

Sometimes in the night I can get him back to sleep just by making sure he has his paci, turning his music back on and letting him cry for a minute. But I would prefer to not let him cry much since he shares a room with his big sister (and it just makes me sad).

Any tips or assurance that I am not alone would be great. TIA!

  • DS woke until I nightweaned at 18 months. He actually got worse... he was waking every 2 hours and I was over it. So I stopped feeding him. You can still comfort in other ways, but some kids just don't give up night nursing easily.

You need to make up the calories, though. Either by more daytime nursing or more solids/cow milk.

  • DD is 14 months and wakes 2-4 times at night to nurse. I am OK with it for now. She starts the night in the crib, the we bed share after her 1st waking. I will try Dr Gordon's method at some point.

My guy is only 7 months... but this is us exactly... and i know it doesnt help you, but your post makes me feel so much better that some babies are up in the MOTN for so long - because EVERYONE seems to be telling me he should be STTN and I should refuse to feed him because he isnt hungry... uggg....
  • At almost 15 months we are in the same boat. I am so over it, but every time she looks up at me with her sweet little face, I remember that this period of our lives is very short. It's also easier for me to feed her and put her back to bed than to do anything else... I guess I'm lazy.

  • I know I am a few days late in coming back to check this post, but thank you for your replies. It does help to know I am not the only one. I will have to check on this Dr. Gordon's method, but I am trying to enjoy the snuggles for now, too.

  • DD will be 1 on Sunday (sniff sniff) and sometimes she'll STTN but other times she'll be up once in the MOTN. I feel like this started when we went on vacation (sleeping somewhere different plus being on "beach time") before this we were STTN consistently. After vacation she got sick and ever since that she'll sometimes wake up. About 50% of the time. Not sure how weaning will affect her...
