Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Breast feeding worried supply is low

Hello all question for you. I have a three month old who I exclusively bf. he has been a colicky baby so we nurse often. I just went back to work a few days ago and don't feel like I'm pumping as much as I did with my first child and he never ate much in one sitting so I stored up a lot of milk. This time however I am using a different pump. The Lansinoh double electric ( not sure what is called exactly) as to where I used a Medea freestyle with my first. So my first question was if anyone's milk supply was less the second time or if anyone has experience with the Lansinoh pumps?

Re: Breast feeding worried supply is low

  • Weird. I used a Lansinih affinity double electric the first time and a Medela PISA this time and have had much more success in pumping. I SAH so I don't pump often but around 3-4 months last time the Lansinoh pump just stopped working for me. I mean it worked fine but it would only extract maybe an ounce where as I know my breasts were full with much, much more. Have you tried replacing ll valves, shields, tubing etc? Sometimes that had a negative impact. Lansinoh actually replaced mine for free when I called, so maybe try that. If you're worried a out supply just bf and do skin to skin as much as you can when you're with your baby.

  • My supply is drastically less with my 2nd. The 1st time around I could wake up in the morning, feed dd off one side and pump 8 oz off the other. This time around I have never gotten more than 4 oz, and that is even after going all night. During the day i am luck to grt 4 oz combined , and ds is taking at least 6 when he has a bottle. I am going back to work next week and am afraid I won't be able to keep up. And the only 2 times I have tried formula,ds projectile vomited aftewards. I am adding 2 pumping sessions (one before i go to bed and one at 4 am after ds eats) to try to build my stash and up my supply.
  • My supply has been different with all 3 of my kids.  My second, I did not produce enough at all and had to supplement pretty early on.  Now, my supply seems to be the best out of all 3 of my kids.  I have enough to feed my DD and can usually stash 3-4 oz a day in the freezer.  I am trying to build a freezer stash, because if history repeats itself around 8-9 months, my supply tanks and is almost zero, so I would like to have something to fall back on.

And as to the second part of your question, the pump makes a huge difference.  I used an advent pump with my first and a PISA with my 2nd and now 3rd and the PISA is way better no questions asked.
