We are going to a birthday party for a 6 year old boy who has down syndrome (or Downs? Or is the preferred term Trisonomy 21 or?) I am assuming that he will like the same things any 6 year old boy would like but figured I would check here. I didn't have a ton of time in the toy store but grabbed three options (actually my 5 year old chose them since it is for his buddy). The first is a Lego kit for ages 5-8 where you build a vehicle and trailer and it has little men that drive it. Ds5 yrs chose this and it is his first choice for a gift to give at the party. These are the smaller legos (probably Ninjago sized- it might be Ninjago but I forget) so they require some dexterity and concentration.
Before we left I wondered if T21 affects fine motor or other skills needed to do something like this and also grabbed some standard truck and plane type toys that any kid could get a kick out of as well as some putty, slime, and fidget things to stick ontop of whatever. Are the legos a fine fit? Mom told me he likes "everything" and my experience of him is that he is a happy, funny, competent kid.

  • Yikes sorry about the formatting. I'm on an iPad and haven't used the new boards before.

  • I'm sure your fine. Yes fine motor can be a problem but its usually too bad. My dd loves everything a 7yo girl would with the exception of reading and writing. She loves these too but she's just not as far along as other 7yo's
