NBFR - Cell phones

So DH and I are going to switch providers, and are thinking about adding smart phones to the mix, but I don't even know where to start! How much data would two people need?

Re: NBFR - Cell phones

  • It depends. My mom and I talked about this once. They all have almost constant WiFi and computer access, so they only share 1gig for the whole family (my mom, SF, and 15yo brother).

However, DH and I rarely ever have WiFi access and I do take online classes (yes, I do them on my phone). He uses his phone for entertainment purposes when he is at work (24hr shifts and not always on a call or servicing the ambulance so sometimes there can be a lot of time to fill). Luckily, he got a smart phone when unlimited data packages were available. He definitely needs it. I, however, only use about 1gig per month, maybe more during the school year so I have 2 gigs in my phone. It is still cheaper for us than having internet at home, though.

  • It really depends on how much you think you use it.  And if you have no clue, or are like ambrvan's husband - get unlimited. It will be worth it.  I personally have 1GB.  I don't even come close to using it. I check facebook and Pinterest and occasionally google directions to a client's business. I don't play games on it or do anything else that is high data drainage.

Talk to your provider about what you use it for, and what you think you use it for and they can help you.

Otherwise, I suggest giving it a good guess, monitor your first full month and then adjust accordingly,

  • Walmart's Straight Talk is a good bet.  Its $45 a month for unlimited talk, text and data.  The only downside is the phone options are limited though.  You wont get an iPhone, but you supposedly can switch out your sim card....

DH, SD and SS have the plan.  Now, SS got a sucky phone because he did not want to spend the money on a good one.  And DH does not really use the data.  But my SD loves loves loves it.

I am waiting until my 2 year contract is up to see if that works or not.

  • We currently have Verizon, but DH is p!ssed that they handed over all the phones records (calls, texts, etc.) to NSA, without NSA having a valid reason for wanting to access them. He wants to switch to a provider that hasn't done that, his quick research shows that Sprint and Nextel have also done so.

  • And apparently AT&T is doing it too - it looks like we won't be switching after all, lol.

  • And for anyone who cares NSA is getting record of the location the call took place, phone number called, time of the call, and length of the call.

  • I don't think it matters who you switch to as far as the NSA stuff is concerned. We are all getting screwed in the name of something incredibly unconstitutional in this. And they have been doing it way longer than since Obama took office, I'm sure. I'm also sure this will be found and recorded and my door will be kicked in one day on the suspicion that I am a terrorist and "not a patriot."
