eye infection?....or tired?

So LO is exhausted. While I'm putting her to bed I notice that one eye is bloodshot....but, like, half of the one eye. The lids are fine. She doesn't have a runny nose. The white on the nose side of her eye is pink, the white towards the corner is not. I was thinking about what a strange pattern it was when I remembered that both her eyes had a little gunk in them today. The gunk was small. It disappeared and I just didn't think about it after that. She rubbed her eyes at the standard times - before nap time, before dinner/bed.

Basically, she has an assymetrically red eye. I don't see any scratches...but then, maybe I wouldn't see them if they were there anyway. Thoughts?

Re: eye infection?....or tired?

  • I am of the "if you are worried, call the pedi" club. If she doesn't seem to be painful then it can wait til Monday I think. Better to get it checked out than not and have it be pink eye. Then everyone gets it! Good luck!

  • true true. I've never had it. It looks  like a really uncomfortable condition.

I'll keep an eye on it and we'll see what's up Monday morning.
  • If it is pink eye it will get progressively worse until you get medicine (so you'll be able to figure it out soon enough). She could have allergies or just have scratched her eye.

  • My LO was having eye trouble with gunk and looked a lil like water bubbles on one eye, I took him in and they said allergys. They gave me eye drops that where hard to put in and made his eyes redder and he rubbed them more, to the point one swelled a little. So I quit giving them to him and got him some Benadryl. I don't give him a full dose, and I only give it when he needs it.

At first it was every four hours for a couple days, then went to twice a day. Yesterday he got it once, his eyes are doing so much better now.

Hope your LO is ok and it's nothing!

  • Maybe she scratched herself?

I agree with PP...if it's pink eye you'll know soon enough. If she is not in any discomfort I would wait till Monday and then maybe bring her to get checked.

  • I would just watch it. N rubs his eyes when he is tired and sometimes one gets a little red. When he was teething he had a little bit of drainage from his eyes that was yellow. His eyes never got red and it never seemed to bother him so I just let it run it's course. Most pink eye is actually viral in nature and doesn't need any treatment.

  • When H's eyes got red and gunky, squirting BM in them a few times a day cleared it up.

  • Milk is sooooo soothing in the eyes. Water burns or stings, but milk is AMAZING! I got a small piece of bark in my eye at a park once and rested my eye in a lid of milk, sweet relief!

  • Hey all, thanks for the advice. She woke up this morning, redness gone..eyes a little puffy. She was super tired, so I think maybe that contributed to the eye puffiness.

So far, no more gunk. Eye rubbing reduced....so I guess she was just tired. I'm expecting she'll have a few allergies. DH and I have quite a few. It's possible that is in the mix. I'll have to give bm a shot!

@tngrl3 funny you mentioned the teeth. She was grumpy and pulling at ears despite ibuprofen today. When I could finally get a look inside I could see the tips of her top incisors and at least one of her canines coming in on the bottom. They are all coming in at once.
