Interesting Napping Issue

Hi All,

Our 4 month old son is an interesting sleeper when it comes to naps.  He sleeps from 7pm to 7am each night and through the night.  However, he generally needs a nap every 2 hours of being awake.

We always try to put him down for his nap in his crib.  The same conditions exist for when we put him down to sleep each night.  Around 60% of the time he doesn't like it and the other 20% or so of the time he'll only sleep for 20 minutes or so.  The remaining 20% of the time he loves it.

For the 60% of the time he doesn't like it we'll rock him to sleep in our family room on his boppy.  We'll transfer him to the couch and he'll easily nap an hour or more.

Why do you think he sleeps so much better on the boppy?  My wife and I want him to sleep in his crib, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Thoughts?

Re: Interesting Napping Issue

  • He probably likes how snug he feels and perhaps the incline. I would try swaddling (if you don't already) and prop up the crib mattress with a pillow so it's on an incline.

  • Ditto that he probably likes feeling snug, but I think it's pretty normal still for naps to be long or short at this point - consistent naps develop later than consistent night sleep.
