3rd Trimester

Effacement and little dialtion

Quick back story: a few weeks ago I went into PTL because of a newly diagnosed IC 23/2 at 2cm dilated and 40% effaced. It was to late for a cerclage. I had all the meds, never had any contractions. I stayed on HBR for 5 weeks and was sent home at 28/1 for SBR. I am now 29/2 and had a scare this morning. Went the bathroom and had not quite a gush of clear liquid but enough that concerned me due to the past few weeks. We took off for L&D. Turns out I am extremely well hydrated and mixed with normal discharge that's all it was. All amnio tests were negative-no leaking, NST was great-no contractions. Baby looks fine. However, bringing me to my point, after today's cervical check I am less dilated at 1cm but I am now 70% effaced.

I understand dilation and effacement can be graded different based on examiner and yes all times checked they were different.

But has any one decreased on dilation and increased on effacement and been able to hold out for a few weeks?
Thanks!

  • Your cervix can tighten back up again and even close back up. That's a great sign that maybe this little one wont pull a Houdini hat trick and make an early exit.

  • @hfrizzle I see you on my BMB (oct). Your opinion, you think even with that amount of effacement there's a chance?
I'm a realist so I'm trying to think positive but I understand it may mean nothing at all.
  • The effacement is a crap shoot. I don't know if it would thicken back up again, but like you said, someone could have a different measurement than the other person.

I agree. Time to relax and see how it goes.
  • During my bout of ptl in my last pregnancy, I was 3cm and 100% effaced at 36 weeks. Labor stopped and they let me go home. I didn't go into labor again until a week and a half later.

This time, at 31 weeks I had ptl, ended up 50% effaced and a fingertip dilated. Three days later I had an ultrasound that confirmed my cervix was long and closed.

Sorry to hear about your ptl issues. It is no fun! Thanks for your story! I'm holding out hope things will change and if not that she will just stay put at a few more weeks! The only relief I sort of feel is the dilation is less.
  • That definitely is a good sign I think (and the point of my story... ;)).

Good luck! I hope she not only stays put but that you are reasonably comfortable until things do progress...

  • @arielle27 I haven't been uncomfortable at all is the thing. They have called me a "silent dilator".
  • Oh, that is scary... Well again, I hope nothing progresses too much too quickly!! Every extra day/week you get now will be great for your little one!
