Bottle sterilizes?

Do you need one? Waste of money? I am planning on pumping for nanny/ daddy to be able to feed a few times a week.

From what I have heard from family and friends, washing your bottles before hand works just as well.

  • Well, I would want to sterilize in some way after washing. Just not sure if the electric ones are more convenient or if people found they weren't using them. There are also the microwave trays or just plain boiling water. Should I register for an electric? If so, which one?

  • I couldn't tell you. My mom told me she had one but never used it.  My aunt boiled hers I know that, but for electric or non electric i would be of no use.

I don't know! Is hand washing alone okay? If you use dishwasher, do you need special soap? STMs what did u do?

  • Dishwashers are fine. First DD we had no dishwasher so soap and hot water worked she's fine.

  • Oh ya and regular soap for dishwasher/hand washing

I used Medela's sterilizing bags for my pump parts and bottle parts; I sterilized the bottles in the dishwasher.  You can get 20 uses out of each bag.

ETAx2:  I used regular dishwasher tabs and I always cleaned the parts before sterilizing.

  • I used the dishwasher and did have a sterilizer that goes in the microwave which I used mostly for my pump parts. I EP'd with DD so I was constantly using it.

  • I boiled them before the first use, then the dishwasher worked just fine after that. Or hot soapy water. Bottle sterilized are a huge waste of money In my opinion. I think they were created to scare parents! Now I could see the sterilizing bags for pump parts maybe, but I used the dishwasher for them too & it was fine.

  • Don't need one.  You can just set a pot of water to boil and boil all bottle and pump parts for 5 min and they are sterilized.  That's what I did with my DD's bottles/pump parts when I wanted to sterilize (which I did maybe once a week or so, and that was probably far more than necessary.)  The rest of the time I would just use the dishwasher.
  • Thanks ladies

  • I've had two children so far and not once used a sterilizer....I hand washed all the parts myself and never had a problem.  I think buying a sterilizer is a waste of money!

This exactly. We got a sterilizer and it was a total waste of money. After the initial washing and sterilizing (which can be done by a boiling pot of water), washing bottles in a dishwasher should get rid of any harmful germs and bacteria.
