Vent: My neighbors are aholes

So, when the weather starts cooling down H and I like to start sleeping with the windows open. This has worked great the last 3 years we have lived in this house. This year, I might get arrested.

Our next door neighbor never brings their dog inside, EVER. He really likes to sit in their garage barking starting around 2 am. Our bedroom is next to their garage. They know he sits in there and barks yet do nothing about it because "he's a dog."

We discovered at 5 am this morning that one of our behind neighbors now has a rooster. A fucking ROOSTER, in the CITY! WTF?!? So now, even if we take our chances with the dog not barking, the fucking rooster will wake us up 2 hours before any alarm or our DD wakes us. Oh and our other bedroom window faces the backyard, of course.

If this continues after Fetus is here, and they wake him/ her, I will make my anger known. I will be the crazy lady in a bathrobe, wild hair, and leaky boobs ringing a mofo's doorbell. I really, really hate my neighbors.

  • Do you live in my neighborhood? ;) My nutty neighbors are like that. They decided to raise rabbits and chickens. Once they tried to keep bees, but I called animal control on them for that one. I also spoke to animal control about the chickens. It turns out that they are allowed up to 11 hens! Roosters are NOT allowed though. Maybe check with animal control for your city?

    Different neighbors, that's the kicker!

I may have to call animal control this week and get the specifics. H thought he heard a chicken the day but brushed it off because "who would have a chicken in our neighborhood." I have an idea of who it is.

@cjcouple I'll let you know tomorrow what time the little devil starts hollering.

  • Definitely call animal control on both issues. Your city should have some ordinance/law in regards to roosters.  They may allow hens but not roosters.
  • Yeah, I'd call either animal control or the police and file a complaint. You can also make it sound like you're concerned about the dog's welfare, being outside 24/7, and that might help things along.
I'm used to roosters, so I can sleep right through them, but a dog barking right next door is totally tough. Like everyone else has said though, I'd check that people are even allowed to have roosters, because generally in a urban environment they're a no-no.

  • Backyard chickens are on the uprise now (at least here) and so chickens may be allowed.  I would make friends and try to get eggs ;) BUT roosters are usually not allowed in neighborhoods or the city for the very reason you mentioned so I would look into it. If they are not allowed call them in.

Sorry about the dog :( I feel guilty if my dog howls during the day! And he is not even a barker, he just occasionally howls when he hears a sound or the dogs next door are barking. I will bring him in if he starts doing it repeatedly so he does not bug anyone. The neighbors dogs bark CONSTANTLY. They have a dog door and they run outside yipping anytime my dog or son goes into the back yard. If they were waking me up I would be crazy lady and go knock on their door ;) They could keep the dog out of the garage and in the house so it does not wake you up.

  • Has anyone tried the high-pitched barking deterrent thing?

We had a hand held one that we used at our old house- the good neighbor moved and someone with three yappers moved in, they barked anytime we were in our backyard.  It would work- we only hand the hand held version- but at the time there was one that you could leave outside and set the sensitivity level at the time we bought ours.

That would drive me crazy!  Do you have an HOA?  If so, check with them about the barking dog & rooster situation.  Our HOA specifically states no chickens or roosters.  The barking dog could also get them a fine then after a set amount of complaints they would have to re-home the dog. You could call the non-emergency number for the police & see about noise ordinances in your community regarding a barking dog & rooster. GL

  • Someone in our neighborhood growing up had a rooster and my mom called the town and reported it. They were told to get rid of it bc you can't have a rooster in the neighborhood, you needed a certain amount of acreage. I would call your town and see if there are similar rules.

  • My mom's neighbors have a rooster and because they have over 5 acres, it can stay.  Seemes like the town/city can answer that for you.  It is a huge issue for them because they live next door to my dad's brother who they sort of get along with and they just don't care about anyone else.  Not worse, but maybe more hurtful.  The dogs....thati s awful.  There are probably noise laws about that too!

  • Cities that allow a certain number of chickens often don't allow roosters. I have no suggestions that haven't been mentioned.

Other than to say, the rooster will crow at sunrise every day. And you will learn to sleep through it.

  • Chickens are the new trendy thing to have. Damn hipsters.
  • I can handle chickens. They can be gross and noisy but not at the butt crack of dawn LOL I can't think of a reason to have a dang rooster though! If we lived in the country it would be whatever, I grew up in the country so I know you get used to it. We live in the city though, not a large city but a city none the less.

Also, to PP who mentioned the HOA, we don't have one. I do, however, expect other neighbors to begin complaining also.

  • Call the city and see if there is a noise ordinance and or dog owner regulations. That wouldn't fly in my city.
