Mmr

I know this topic is controversial, but how many of you had your LO get the mmr? Or plan to soon?

Dd got the chicken pox vaccine at her 12 month but i postponed the mmr another month. She got small reaction to the chicken pox vaccine. All these things make me so nervous!!!

Re: Mmr

  • Thanks for reminding me. I don't know, I might ask doc to split them up if she can, more for my hubby's peace of mind than anything. A couple of the firefighter he works with have planted doubt in his head that he can't totally shake. He says it is up to me, but if I can find a middle road that satisfies me (DS gets all his vacs), then I will do it to make him happy

  • DD got her chicken pox, hep, and MMR shot at her 1 year checkup. Her Dr has a super strict vaccine schedule. She didn't have any reaction to any of her shots

  • We follow the CDC schedule.  No plans to delay.

  • Our doctor says he's required to offer the CDC schedule, but he recommends a different schedule. The MMR and chickenpox are recommended to wait until 2, so we are waiting. He gets all his vaccines, just following his clinic's recommended schedule.
  • Why the big deal about waiting?

  • There have been recent outbreaks of measles so no plans to delay. He will get the kit n caboodle on the 4th.

What reason does he give for changing it?

  • I'm not sure how DD's shots will go.  Her pedi said she didn't have any shots at her next appointment but I don't think she realized the next appointment was 1 year - not 9 months.  We split up DD's shots for allergy reasons.  She gets no more than 2 at a time and the MMR and chicken pox will be separate.  Beyond that, I don't know.

Honestly, I think it's more traumatic to drag them to the pedi's office and go through the whole ordeal multiple times. Just get it over with. Both kids have gotten the usual 3-5 shots per visit and were over it by the time we got to the car. And don't have to be subjected to it again for a good long while.
This part does suck.  This should be the last time we separate the vaccines because, I believe, she'll then have everything at least once and we'll know whether or not she'll have my allergies.  We'll want to know exactly what caused it if she does react.  The MMR vaccine caused severe seizures and I was hospitalized and sedated for a period of time because of it.  It's a VERY rare reaction.  However, I had to get that one twice before the doctors couldn't deduce which vaccine caused it - which means I had that same reaction twice.  Luckily, my titers show that I'm still immune.

DH was against vaccines.  Well, he still is.  DSS was not vaccinated until DD was born.  Since, he's been caught up.  Vaccines are MUCH harder as the child gets older!

  • @LiliDragon The problem is, that crap is STILL being spouted off as real.  The original study was discredited, but celebrities jumped on the anti-vaccine train and keep.beating.the.horse.  There are also several "articles" floating around Facebook claiming that the government, here and overseas, did this huge coverup and paid families millions because vaccines gave their children autism.

This sounds horrible, but I wish a public figure who opted out of vaccines would catch measles or mumps or whatever.  A friend of mine's little girl caught Rotavirus before she was old enough to be vaccinated and poor thing was SO sick.

  • DD has gotten, and will be getting, all the recommended vaccines on the recommended schedule.  Research about vaccine dangers has been soundly discredited, as other posters have pointed out, and the chance of a serious reaction is extremely rare.

My mom and her siblings all had mumps as children; one of her brothers contracted a number of complications and nearly died.  I don't want DD to deal with any of that!

I am kind of excited about the chicken pox vaccine, actually.  My worst memory from elementary school was having to miss two weeks (including being in a Tulip Time parade!) because of chicken pox.  I had a super mild case and didn't even feel sick and I just wanted to go back to school!  I'm glad Charlotte won't have to deal with chicken pox.
  • We follow the reccommendations, so he'll be getting it at his 1 year check up. So far, we haven't had any life threatening reactions to a vaccine, so I don't see the point in delaying.

Besides, I really don't want to drag my kid to that germ infested waiting room of the pedi's office twice, if I don't have to.

  • Lila is vaccinated according to the AAP schedule for her actual rather than adjusted age. While the link between vaccines and autism has been clearly disproven, Jenny McCarthy and Mothering Magazine notwithstanding, there is question of the exponential rise in peanut allergies and peanut oil used in vaccines. While that would not stop me from following the recommended schedule, it is certainly something to think about.

That's not true about not catching chicken pox again. It can happen. One of my friend's kids, fully vax'ed, got chicken pox.

  • I don't get why intelligent people turn down vaccines. There are probably millions of moms in third world countries that would love to have the chance to vaccinate their children. Instead their babies die from diseases like measles. The risk of dying from an illness like measles is greater than the risk from the vaccine.

  • OP, if you are not planning on vaccinating on schedule, are you going to keep your LO away from other people until he has all appropriate vaccinations?

  • I was vaccinated, but still got the chicken pox THREE TIMES!!

We are following the normal schedule, and getting it all over with.
  • We have been and will continue to follow the schedule on time. No side effects besides the normal crying withe poke of the needle.
I just don't understand why people wouldn't jump at the chance to do something to help their child.

    It's so the ultimate FWP.

    YES.

Hippie-crites. My city is full of them. Nothing beats being "natural" and shunning modern medicine from the comfort of your heated and plumbed suburban home with a first world hospital a car ride away.

Correlation =/= causation. I don't even think it's "something to think about." If my kid gets a peanut allergy from vaccinations (unlikely as that is), I can work around that. If she dies from polio...not so much.
Allergies are becoming more prevalent, it's true, but scientists are just fricking stabbing in the dark to find the cause right now. It's ridiculous. Early exposure does not cause allergies, so I don't see how a vaccine can even potentially do that. It's such a small dose...it would more likely work as immunotherapy.
My dad caught polio as a child before he was old enough to be vaccinated ( back then they gave the shots in school in kindergarten), my grandmother was pregnant at the time and had her baby while my dad was sick. The baby caught polio from my dad and passed away when it was less than a month old. My dad ended up having one leg permanently shorter than the other also. It's so sad, but something that could not be prevented then, like it can now. I can't imagine why anyone would risk something like that happening to their children.

  • I am a nurse, and my husband is a doctor. We are very educated in terms of up to date medicine, we always vaccinate according to CDC, and AAP guidelines. We will deal with any fevers, upset tummy, etc if it happens. Better than losing a child to a preventable disease.....

  • We're getting it at 12 months.

The rational, logical side of me says it's fine.

The paranoid part of me is going to give an extra supplement regimen (we already do DHA fish oil and vitamin D, I'll add vitamin C in the few days before and after).

Will it do anything? Probably not, but it will make me feel better. Just like how I slathered lotion on on belly every day when pregnant, even though I knew it wouldn't really do anything, it made me feel better that I was doing something.

  • See. I told you it was controversial. For all of you getting upset with me, im literally delaying the mmr 1 month. Already have the appointment. Im sure its unnecessary but since dd is a peanut, i prefer not to have them give her all that at once.
Shes gotten a cold and now a rash after each round of shots. Just fresks me out a bit

@Whittyone12 how awful. I can't even imagine how that must have felt for your grandmother. My grandpa had polio as a kid and was lucky to survive. It is so sad that within a single generation people can be absolutely oblivious to the horrors of these diseases. It is incomprehensible to me.
My mom has the scar on her arm from her polio vax. I havent seen her in years but I remember it. I remember my mom telling how she caught chicken pox in her teens and she was hospitalized.  I'm sorry but those stories are way more striking than the possibility of a negative reaction.  I'm good. Nene has all her vax and will get her boosters at 11. Amir will follow the same.

We always split up vaccines into 2 visits, I don't like giving everything at once, I feel like it's a lot. We schedule ~2 weeks apart, so all the vaccines are still given in the month they are supposed to be given.

FWIW I wasn't upset with you. It was more the comment about delaying a whole year. Or people in general that don't vaccinate at all.
