What would you do? [sick toddler]

We came home from a birthday party yesterday late afternoon and DS told me he was cold [we live in Texas, so it was not cold! Lol]. He felt warm so when we came home I took his temp and it was 102. He was acting a little tired but he played hard so I wasn't worried. He ate dinner, I put him to bed around 7 with Tylenol. Checked his temp around 9 and it was 103. Gave Motrin this time and he went back to sleep. He woke up around 1 am and it was back up to 103 again so I gave Tylenol and brought him in bed with me. He was wide awake and acting totally normal! He finally fell asleep and woke up about 6 with a 103 again. In between medicines I can get it down to about 101 sometimes 100. He's eating, drinking, wetting totally normal. But what concerns me is there was a note on his door at daycare that he was exposed to strep throat. Wouldn't he be miserable?! I know I was when I had it when I was around 7. If he's not better [temp wise] around lunch we were going to take him to ER. Should I chance it and make an appt for tomorrow morning or just bring him to the ER today?

If he has a fever, he can't go to daycare tomorrow anyway. I personally wouldn't bog down an er on a Sunday for a step test. I would wait until tomorrow and get an early appointment at the pedi for a strep test. If you really want him to be seen today, I'd go to a minute clinic or target clinic. A steep test takes 10 minutes and you could sit in an er for hours.

I would be torn like you- high fever would make me want to take LO to doc/urgent care but acting normal and eating/drinking/wetting would make me call pedi and ask to see if I could wait?

Like PP said- you could wait a long time at ER. Have you called pedi to see what they think?

Scary as it is for parents 103 isn't an extreme fever and it's good that it comes down with meds. I'd for sure call the pedi tomorrow but unless something gets worse I wouldn't go to the ER.

Thanks ladies! I ended up calling the tele nurse and she said 105 and above to go to er. And if not gone by tues then to get a strep test.

My DD had puss pockets on her throat and ran a fever like that when she was 8 months old. Our pedi said babies can't get strep and diagnosed her with bronchitis, even though it presented the same as strep. We basically just had to wait it out. She was a little lethargic, but acted normal most of the time.

Yup, that's what the nurse line told me when DD had a 103 temp a couple weeks ago- 104-105 is when you start to worry. Mine had the temp for 2 days then broke out in a rash on her trunk. I'm guessing it was Roseola or another virus.

My LO had a fever like this last weekend for a few days. It finally broke and she ended up with a rash. Pedi diagnosed it as Roseola, very common for toddlers and went away on its own. Keep an eye on it and hopefully it turns out to be nothing.
