C-sections

Breech - when did you commit to C-section?

Hi Ladies,
I am lurking here, I am usually posting over on PAIF.

For those who have breech presentation and are planning on C-section or those who have had C-section for breech baby, at what point did you commit to C-section and schedule a date?

Our baby is in a breech / pike position and has been that way for at least 3 weeks or more.  Although I am not quite 30 weeks, baby is measuring ahead, almost 32 weeks size, so it's looking less likely that he will turn head down.  I am just wondering when might be reasonable for me to call it a day and book a C-section...

Thanks in advance!

Re: Breech - when did you commit to C-section?

  • I tried a version at 40 weeks. It didn't work and we did the section that day. If you read the hypnobirthing book there are some tips for helping your baby turn naturally. But if it doesn't turn they won't schedule you until after 37 weeks from what I understand. (unless there is a medical reason to take the baby before term.)

  • Not until 35 weeks but I'm having twins so the likely hood of flipping at that point is pretty slim. That being said my Ob said we could always schedule it and cancel anytime if the baby flipped. I would say even if you are measuring big you still have plenty of time for baby to flip, I think they would prob make you wait until much closer to schedule, good luck!

  • With my twins I was in the early 30's weeks, like pp said, less room = less likely to flip, also the way mine were positioned, it would've taken a miracle for my presenting twin to flip.  The last baby I delivered was breech from at least the 18w u/s until 32w, at my 34w appt we were going to schedule the section but he was finally vertex (still ended up with a c/s at 41w because I was VBAC so my OB wouldn't induce and he was showing no signs of coming, my OB felt the risk of going longer outweighed the risk of a c/s).

  • We found out he is breech at week 37 and committed that same day since he is also measuring wa ahead. I am at 39wreks today and my C is tomorrow morning :-)
We didn't even bother tryin to turn him. Rather avoid he stress on us both and just get him and I through this safely.

  • The possibility was on my mind after 32 weeks, but I knew it was too early to really worry. Dr said I could be annoyed at 34 weeks, concerned at 36 weeks. We tried a version at 37 weeks, which didn't work. It wasn't until then that I could focus on preparing for a c-section instead of dwelling on whether or not she would flip. It's booked for 39w5d, but I'm going to bring that up at my appointment tomorrow - it's a little too close to my due date for my comfort for a second baby.

  • We found out lo was breech at 36 weeks. I tried almost all of the spinning babies techniques and am still seeing a Chiropractor who used the Webster technique. I have been 3 times so far. I am 38 weeks today and still have not scheduled a c section date. At my appointment on Thursday I will be 38+2 and I will probably have to choose a date then as my dr wants to do it during my 39th week to avoid me going into labor and the possibility of cord prolapse. We will be trying an ECV prior to the c section though. Good luck!
  • My doctor said if he hasn't turned at 36 weeks we would plan the c section. Went to the 36 week appointment, found out I was already in labor. They did a quick ultrasound to make sure he was still breech then did the section right away. My doctor won't attempt to turn babies, said her insurance provider doesn't allow it.
  • I scheduled it with my doctor at 34 weeks with the understanding that is she turned we could then cancel the c/s. he wanted to get me on the schedule

  • Thanks, Ladies!

I appreciate all the info.  I'm still hoping he'll turn, but if he doesn't I figure there's some reason why he wants to be this way.  I am not planning to try to turn him - too risky for us after all we've been through.  I will see when my OB wants to book (expecting to deliver 37 -39 w b/c of my high risk status)  and I am sure we can cancel if baby turns around in the meantime.

  • Considering I didn't even find out DD was breech until 35 weeks, I'd say you have plenty of time.  We scheduled a version for 39 weeks.  The plan was immediate induction (breaking my water) if ECV was successful, or c-section if unsuccessful.  We didn't end up attempting a version because the epidural caused my blood pressure and DD's heart rate to plummet dangerously, so I was rushed to the OR for a section.  I think my OB made me wait until the 38 week appt to schedule.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I was also high risk and didn't do the version. I didn't want to risk it. I just wanted a healthy baby and mom, even if it meant a c/s.

I was told baby was breech at about 34 weeks. I told my OB to schedule the c/s around 35 weeks. I had decided not to do the version at that point. My OB scheduled my c/s for 2 days shy of 40 weeks.

LO decided to come at 39 weeks, my water broke and we had the c/s at that time.

I just wanted to tell you, I am so happy I didn't do the version. I have also been pleasantly surprised by the c/s. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. I am about a week and a half out from it and I feel pretty good. I am not on any drugs and I walked a mile today (30 minutes).

  • I also opted out of a version as well. My doc didnt suggest doing it. There was a reason she wasnt flipping. I did go to the chiropractor and did some techniques on spinning babies but DD stayed in a complete breech position. DD was breech from 28 weeks on. And we scheduled my CS at my 36 week appt for 39 weeks..

  • I made my decision 2 days shy of 37 weeks. She has been in the same position for more than 8 weeks and when they checked fluid and such, there isn't enough for her to turn. Thus the chances are 1-2%. We scheduled, but were told that they will do an ultrasound right before to be sure she is still breech. If by some miracle she's moved and ready, we can cancel the section.

  • we found out at 37 weeks that DS was breeched and scheduled a c section that day. We didn't get a confirmation yet and didnt do a version either. Hopefully he will flip on his own before the surgery ;)

  • K was always breech, never flipped. My doc had been watching her since 32 or 33 weeks and I started researching a cs at that time. E did a version at 36 weeks I think and when it did not work, we went ahead and scheduled the cs for 39 weeks.
  • We found out he was breech at 34 weeks, tried spinning babies and webster technique multiple times, and attempted the version at 37 weeks. It didn't work, so we scheduled the csection for 38w6d.

  • We just found out last week that our daughter is breech- at 38 weeks.  We know she recently flipped.  We have been trying all sorts of methods from spinning babies.  We have an ultrasound on Thursday to recheck her position and we have a scheduled version for right after that appointment.  She weighs about 6lbs so I am hoping that she flips.
  • We scheduled the c-section for 39 weeks 1day and the dr tried an ECV prior to the section. It was unsuccessful but I was so hopeful that it would work that I was an emotional mess for my c-section that was immediately following. It all ended up being just fine, but I certainly understand not wanting to give up hope! Good luck!
  • We had our version last week and it was unsuccessful.  Baby is now 40 weeks.  C-section scheduled for this Thursday.
