We have this one, it has timer or no timer options, and the rain sound is pretty similar to the fan we have in our little guys room. We also love the projector function.
We had one for a while (can't remember the brand - it wasn't very loud, though), but when DS was around 3 months old he got really sick and congested, so we have been using a humidifier since then, and it gives off just the right amount of noise, so I actually just do that instead. I refill it maybe once every 3 nights or so.
DD sleeps with it on white noise every night (has a timer AND no timer option). Also has multiple lullabies, rain, heart beat, and ocean sounds. Has a projector with 3 picture slides, but we haven't needed that (yet).
We use a Sweet Pea mp3 player. They are AWESOME! You can use any mp3 for white noise, they're super durable, and they will totally grow with your child. I even use them in my classroom for my second graders to listen to recorded books.
We use the sleepy sounds app when we are on the go if you have a smart phone. It's free and you can make it play indefinitely.
We also use Sleepy Sounds. It was free, and we paid to have the ads removed ($2 I think) now that she uses it as a nightlight. It plays nature, white noise or lullabies, and fades one colour to another with option of stars falling. When we're out I use it on my phone and she'll nap anywhere..
