3rd Trimester

anyone else measuring big?

i'm 34 weeks and was measuring at 36 today at my appointment.  I've been measuring 1-2 cm ahead since she started doing the belly measurements.  My Dr. isn't concerned and said it doesn't necessarily mean a large baby, but she also didn't rule that out! My first daughter was 6 lbs 9 oz and birth and not going to lie, I am pretty nervous about delivering a really big baby! Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: anyone else measuring big?

  • It's been said a million times, but I'll say it again - measurements mean very little!!

I measured 50-60 percentile with my first and he was 8lb 12oz. I measured 50 percentile with my second and she was 5lb 13 oz.

I'm measuring 50-60 percentile now and I figure it can go either way!

  • 1-2 cm in either direction is within the realm of normal. Fundal height is far, far from a reliable size prediction, it's just a non invasive way to make sure things are on track.

  • I have been measuring between two and six cm ahead throughout my second and third trimesters. I had to do a size ultrasound around 28 weeks, an extra one-hour glucose screen, another size ultrasound around 32 weeks... none of it particularly concerns my OB, since the ultrasound can be off by two pounds in either direction, fundal height isn't a great predictor, etc., but I think they like to use a variety of tools to kind of get a sense of whether something's wrong or there's just the possibility of a big baby. If it's just fundal height and you're only off by 2 cm, I wouldn't worry too much! I sometimes get that big a difference in measurement when I'm checked by my midwife vs. my OB.

  • I was measuring a couple cm ahead for a while and she is about 7 lbs right now. I am back to measuring normal though. So, she is a little bit big. If your OB is concerned, they will do an ultrasound.

  • I've been measuring 2 weeks ahead since 23 weeks. Just this week I scaled back to measuring 1 week ahead. We were planning to do a growth ultrasound in a few weeks but I'm not sure if we're still going to. I measured 2 weeks ahead and he was 8lbs 12oz at birth.

  • 30 wks, measuring 32.
  • Yeah Dr said I was measuring ahead, but its a tape measure across my belly, there is not much accuracy in that. Seriously I felt bloated anyway.
  • I'm measured 36 weeks at my 30 week appt.  So don't be too worried.  My midwife is sending me for an ultrasound at 32, 34 and 36 weeks to monitor growth of the baby.

  • I would not worry. I measured 30 at 25 weeks and they sent me to have a growth ultrasound.  I was scared all week waiting to find out if he was high risk or if something else was wrong.  He had grown a bit from the 51st percentile to the 72nd in 5 weeks... but the doctor said he was perfectly fine and may be a little early, pretty much he said I probably wont have  a little peanut!

  • Nope, but with all the "You're so big!" comments coworkers and family members keep on saying you'd think I was ready to give birth to an elephant.

  • I'm measuring on track (34 weeks) but the u/s this morning showed the baby was already 6 pounds, with 6 weeks left to go. Its not surpsing since my daughter was 8lbs 6oz....I just hope I dont end up with a 10 pounder! WOAH!
  • Yes, I'm measuring a little over a week ahead based on ultrasound. My 34 wk ultrasound she weighed 5lb 11 oz (plus or minus 13 oz). I personally believe she's closer to 5 or 5.5 hopefully. I'm also terrified of having a huge baby. My daughter was 6 lb 7 oz and that was plenty big enough! Her dad was my size and my husband now is 6'2" so that scares me even more!

  • I'm 28w measuring 33, My dr didn't seem concerned and scheduled an u.s. for 32 weeks just to double check. I am glad to hear that I'm not the only one measuring so far ahead though!!
