What's your heartburn cure?

I've developed a lovely issue with reflux already, though thankfully it's only an occasional thing so far. Last week the burn got pretty bad so I tried an assortment of home remedies - peanut butter, apples, drinking pickle juice - trying to get some relief. None of them were amazing cures, though after trying all three I did get some relief.

I'd love to hear what other home remedies you guys have to ease the fire.

Re: What's your heartburn cure?

  • I use the mint tums, usually just one works for me! GL!

  • I've had heartburn for a few weeks. I started out with Tums tablets but they really didn't work so I went into Gaviacom liquid which seems to work quicker and longer. Admittedly I didn't even try much in the way of natural remedies.
  • I've dealt with reflux for years now and I was on medication but it is really not safe for pregnancy so I stopped it last year. Anyway, the home remedies really don't work as well, but I'll tell you some of the things that I've tried.

    -  Sucking on mints
    -  Mint tums (not really great, and you can't have too many, but sometimes they take the edge off)
    -  Sleeping on my left side, propped up a little bit
    -  Staying away from foods that I know aggravate it (unfortunately a lot of fruits and veggies)
    -  Pop can also really help me personally, but I've read mixed things
    -  I've heard that milk works, it doesn't for me though
    -  Someone on PgAL (boots maybe?) posted that fresh pineapple works, but I haven't tried this one yet
    -  Keeping hydrated with lots of water

So I've tried a lot of little things, none of them are great, but they at least take that bit of edge off so that you can be comfortable. Good luck, I hope that you find something that works for you!

  • I take omeprazole in the morning.

  • Hot water and a half a teaspoon of baking soda! Works like a charm
  • I use Protonix for the acid reflux and Tums for extra calcium - although I've noticed the Tums are also helping when I've eaten something that really isn't agreeing with me.

  • I've been sticking with the Ultra Tums.  1 will usually get me through the day, once in a while I'll take a second before bed.

  • Tums sadly aren't doing a damn thing, so DH has run off to the store with a list of things to try (such a sweet guy!). If nothing else I can always break out the pickle juice and peanut butter again, which did at least lessen the burn.

I read that baking soda is a bad choice, but I don't remember why ::off to google::

If it becomes a consistent thing I'll definitely talk to my talk about previcid or zantac.

ETA: ok, the baking soda can cause/aggravate fluid retention and swelling. Not too much of an issue now, but something to keep in mind as we get further along.

  • Someone told me watermellon and green apples work. I've tried both and they seem to help (more so during the day and when I'm not laying down). Before I go to bed, I pop a tum and that seems to do the trick.
  • I've actually had heartburn pretty much my whole life. I was on prescription zantac when I was 9 and I take the OTC version zantac 75 as needed now which my doctor said was fine to continue during pregnancy. I always try not to take anything unless I have to.

If you find you get it bad at night or in the morning, it does help to elevate the head of your bed with a wedge or extra pillow and not eat or drink too close to bedtime.I find it helps to munch on some sort of bread to absorb some of it so I usually have a bagel, french toast or waffles for breakfast and lightly buttered toast when I'm not feeling well. I try to keep crackers or cereal bars with me these days when I'm on the go. It also helps to identify triggers like acidic or spicy foods (I've always had an aversion to OJ and tomato sauces because of it but I will never give up Mexican food). Soda also helps for me (I usually have it with the toast) and I can only tolerate the taste of ginger ale when I am sick. If that's not available I go to coke (the lemon lime taste of sprite never really makes me feel better and there is something about coke...). Keep in mind excess caffeine, chocolate (and alcohol and sedatives though those don't apply here) can cause your stomach muscles to relax and acid to creep up as well.

I don't think I've ever heard of using peanut butter or apples and definitely not pickle juice. I know when you are having stomach issues the BRAT diet is recommended -bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast.

I hope everyone can find some relief! Unfortunately, baby is only going to get bigger and push more things upwards. Best of luck!

  • Papaya enzyme! You can buy them in most health food stores! They're little melty tabs like tums. I swear by them now.
  • Thanks for all the tips ladies. Ginger ale did the trick. Not sure if it was the ginger in the soda (is there really much in there?) or the burping that came along with it, but I'll take it!

  • Try chewing gum. My mom told my to try it and it works!
Lost my little Appleseed on 12/22/12
  • I never had heartburn until my last pregnancy. Tums weren't working for me anymore, so I now take 1 drop high quality peppermint essential oil in about 4 oz. water. Works like a charm!

  • Oh. My. Goodness. I am 20w4d and just started experiencing heartburn 2 days ago. This is terrible! It's 130am and it's burning and all I want to do is go to sleep. I took 2 tums and am trying to elevate myself as a few have suggested. Hope this works!
  • This heartburn tea has really helped me: https://www.amazon.com/Earth-Mama-Angel-Baby-Heartburn/dp/B0032AM8H8

I can't stand the chalky feel of tums, so I'm drinking lots of tea!
I hope you can find some relief!
