Hygeia or medela

Hi- I am looking into pumps that are covered by my insurance and out of what's covered, I'm torn between the hygeia q and the medela advanced. I have had success with a medela with my dd, but have heard great things about the hygeia pumps. Just curious as to you ladies opinions. Has anyone tried the hygeia...opinions?

Thanks in advanced.

Re: Hygeia or medela

  • I haven't tried the medela - but I did choose the Hygeia (insurance model).  I like it - it's super powerful to where I've never needed to use the highest settings even double pumping.  I also really like that it's a closed system and that Hygeia is such an environmentally friendly company.  I also figured it didn't hurt that it had LLLI's endorsement.

A couple kind of negative things to consider:

    1) It seems a bit noisier than the medela.  I pump in lactation rooms at work, and mine always seems the loudest.  I don't care about this because it's not like I'm trying to be stealthy, but this could bother some people.

    2) it has wide mouth bottle connections on the flanges.  You can buy an adapter, but I didn't realize this going into it.  It also doesn't connect to all wide-mouth bottles well, so that could be a pain.  I always pump into the collection bottles it came with and then dump that into a larger container for storage at work.  Or directly into the Hygeia freezer bags.

    Hope this helps!

  • I have 2 Hygeia's. My cousin gave me hers and then I got one from my insurance company. I do like it however, I have nothing to compare to. I pump into Avent Natural bottles instead of the bottles they give you as I have heard the OZ markers rub off after washings. I like that Hygeia is a closed system unlike Medela.

  • I have the Hygeia. No complaints so far but then again I pretty much EBF at the moment. I will be going back to work on 9/9 so ask me then. I agree w/ PP about it being a closed system. You can resell after use. I also got a 1 year membership to LLL. :)

  • I like the Hygeia, but agree they have terrible customer service. I think they are going through some major changes at their headquarters. With that said, my insurance covered the Hygeia q, but when I went to the actual Hygeia website they list DME providers that will work with your insurance and do all the leg work for you. I ended up going through a company called Lucina Healthcare. They billed my insurance and did all the leg work. I had the Enjoye pump on my doorstep five days later.

  • I should add that by going through Lucina HC I also got the connector pieces that go on the flanges so I can pump directly into my Medela bottles.

  • I have a PISA as well as a Hygeia Enjoye. My Hygeia took a while to get used to since I was used to the PISA (which I used for DS1 and for the first couple months with DS2), but now that I'm sure of the settings it's fine. I get the same amount of milk from both, pretty much. I do use Medela parts on the Hygeia, though. Not only because of the wide neck bottle thing (I have SO many medela + doctor brown's bottles that don't fit on the hygeia) but because the standard size flanges with the Hygeia is 27m. Medela is 24mm and that's the right size for me.
  • Thanks for all the input ladies!
