XP- Rare poster with a Frozen Milk and Suplementing ?

I EPed for my DD for 9 months and my supply tanked to the point that I am no longer pumping at all.  Luckily, I have a substantial freezer stash, about 1000 oz.  However, since I have been feeding her only freezer milk, her tummy seems to be bothering her.  The milk has no smell and tastes fine.  Any ideas? Coincidence?  Also, I am going to have to supplement a bit before her 1st birthday.  Any suggestion?  Is Similac Supplementing worth it, or just good marketing?

  • How do you know her belly is bugging her?  Have her bowel movements changed?  I have given my little guy frozen stuff from my stash before, but he doesn't seem to be bothered at all.  And I think it smells different, not bad, just different.

BTW, you have an AWESOME freezer stash!  Good for you!  I have a couple of months in my stash and my supply is still good.  But I'm looking forward to the end of this whole EPing stuff!

  • She just seems to have belly cramps and bubbles- I can hear them.  No change in bowel movements. But she is also extra fussy, which I guess may also be teething.

  • Hmmm....I don't know.  Maybe she's not agreeing with the frozen version.  I've never really heard of that, but I guess anything is possible.  Have you checked Kellymom?  Maybe she has some insight.
  • Thanks- I will check out Kellymom.

Did you have to make dietary changes while pumping/BFing? Are you sure that the milk is still good- have you tasted it? I'd call a LC. I've had to throw out breast milk and it really sucks. Hopefully you won't have to do that.

  • I have not changed my diet.  I smell and taste every bag and have tossed a few, there is  a difference in which bags are good and which are bad. Thanks for the input.  I am thinking about giving her all formula tomorrow to see if that makes a difference.  Or will the formula upset her tummy too??

  • Yay for you for pumping for 9 months and your amazing stash! I have been giving a frozen bag a day just to use the old stuff so she has the freshest when I quit. As far as the upset belly, is she eating other things that could be to blame it may not be the milk...I would take a closer look at her diet and try to figure out if that may be causing the upset belly.

Formula may upset her tummy too. Does your hospital or pedi have a LC you could call? I've called and spoken to one before without actually having to go in. I'm sure it's tough to see your baby not feeling great but it may just be a tummy bug or something unrelated. You've done a lot of hard work to have that much saved. I'd hate to see that go to waste (obviously I know you would too). Good luck!

  • How old is the milk you are using?

  • thanks for all the input guys! I think the milk was a but past it's prime. It was about 4 months old. I pulled out some from last month and she had no problems. Looks like I will be throwing some out, but at least my DD won't have a belly ache.
