Non-Sitter, Non-Crawler

It's so cool to see that so many people's LOs are sitting and crawling now.  But I wonder...is anyone else's LO not doing either of these things?  Or just mine?  (FTR, I'm not worried about it.  It just seems like we're the only ones.)

Re: Non-Sitter, Non-Crawler

  • DS2 is not crawling yet.  He rolls around like crazy and can get where he wants to go that way.

  • Jackson cannot formally crawl. He can pull himself across the floor on his belly and elbows, but if he tries to get up on his hands and knees, he falls over lol. He can sit unassisted for maybe a minute or two, then also falls over.  So I wouldn't consider him consistently doing either of these things. I also feel like I've seen a lot of "pull-to-stand" posts, and he is nowhere near that.

  • My boy can *kinda* sit up but we won't leave his side bc he will stiffen up and basically throw himself backwards or just wobble over. He can also *kinda* crawl in that he can sort of inch-worm his way across the floor. I wouldn't consider either of these a mastered skill though. I've worked with kids for a long time and took many grad classes child development so I fully KNOW not to compare babies. It's so hard not too! Earlier this week someone posted that their child was crying out for "mama" in their crib and I almost spit out my drink! Umm my boy says "waaaahgarbthaja" and then he farts. I need to get a grip lol.

  • No crawling, rolling, pulling up, scooting, or words of any kind over here. In the last week and a half his sitting has gotten way better, but we don't leave him unassisted yet. It is a little surprising to hear so many stories about mobile babies here in comparison, but I know he will get there when he gets there.

  • LO sits UA pretty well but I still sit right behind him bc occasionally he likes to fall backwards or face plant his play mat. I still put him on his belly all the time so he can try to crawl but he just rolls right back onto his back, then fusses bc he'd rather be sitting or standing (assisted of course) lol. So, no crawling over here either and it doesn't look like its going to happen anytime soon. Although sometimes I think he might just skip crawling and go right to walking instead.

I think this will be DD. she sits unassisted really well, and she can stand supporting herself against furniture but she's barely even tried to crawl! She does lie on her back and scoot around that way, but lately siting and standing is more interesting. I suspect we'll just have an early walker on our hands.

  • No rolling here. He can roll back to belly but never does it on purpose. And when he does do it, he looks freaked. He can sit up assisted and unassisted for couple seconds. He's getting better. No crawling. And I'm totally fine with that!

  • No rolling, crawling, standing, and barely lifts her head. But boy will she talk your ear off. She was a late term preemie and one of the older ones on the board so it makes me worried when I see everyone else progressing so well with their gross motor skills.

  • My boys roll and that's all. No crawling, pulling themselves up to standing, no sitting unassisted. I am totally ok with that because the thought of two mobile babies makes my head spin. I would enjoy the sitting but so far it's a no go. Nolan would prefer I hold him in a standing position or he prefers laying on his back. Luke could care less about anything - he just wants to eat his feet.

DD isn't crawling at all, and nowhere near pulling up to stand. The closest she's gotten to crawling is attempting to bend her knees and get them under her which she hasn't been able to do yet. She's getting closer with sitting, she can sit unassisted sometimes for very short periods of time (like, a few seconds). I would never leave her anywhere sitting up because she very quickly loses her balance and topples over.
ETA: She does roll both ways really well.

  • He is just starting to sit and he also rolls from back to front, but that is about it. We are also one of the younger ones of this board.

I am in the same boat. My LO is 7 1/2 months (she was a 34w5d preemie) and is still not sitting or crawling. She just learned rolling about 2 weeks ago. I think our preemies just take a little extra time to develop. TB makes it so easy to compare babies, which can be a bad thing for making us worry needlessly. If I wasn't on TB I would have no idea that my LO is "behind" even taking into consideration her adjusted age in her development. I'm sure that all of a sudden one day she will be crawling and I will miss her being immobile!
To the preemie moms, DD1 was a 34w1d preemie, and she didn't roll on purpose until she was 9 months old. No sitting unassisted until after that, either. But by 11 months 1 week, she was walking. It went fast. Really fast. So don't worry, they may just need a little extra time!

And OP, yeah, DD2 is rolling but no sitting unassisted and not even close to crawling. She just started saying "bababa" and "wawawa" in the last few days. I am not eager for another mobile kid, and I really hope she holds off on crawling until after our international flight in about a month. Long flights with babies who just want to move are awful.

In regard to flying with mobile babies, DD just started scooting and rocking on her hands and knees, and I was thinking the exact same thing. We will be taking her on a flight soon. I'm pretty nervous. It's only about 3.5 hours, so I'm hoping that wont be too long. I know it will seem like an eternity to all on board if we have a screaming baby!

  • DD is 25 weeks and 2 days old and is rolling really well but is nowhere near crawling yet and definitely can't sit up on her own lol she does, however, LOVE her door jumper and exersaucer :) they all develop at their own pace!

  • I'm with you- I often see mom's posting about things their LO's are doing and thinking that my baby is behind when he really isn't...at all. I like to go off of the monthly developmental checks in What to Expect the First Year. They break it down by what 90% of babies this age are doing, 75%, 50%, and 25%. I think that it can get really skewed here, probably because moms are most likely to post when their LO is ahead of schedule rather than on schedule or a little behind. So we have those 25% babies overrepresented in our sample :) Not to hate on those moms with advanced babies, I don't mind seeing the posts, it just needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

My baby will be 6 months on Thursday. He can roll back to belly, and belly to back (but only over his left), sit unassisted for a few minutes at a time, stand with support, and say different vowel and consonant sounds. He is not close to crawling, pulling up to standing, or saying words. He seems to develop his fine motor skills more quickly than gross motor skills (e.g. he has been able to rake, grab, and pass objects back and forth from hand to hand since about 4 months, but didn't have great head control, didn't bear weight on his legs, or roll belly to back until 5 months).

  • Ds can sit and roll extremely well. He has been trying tocrawl for about 1.5 months, but with no luck. I think his legs are too short. For height he is under 3rd percentile, but is chubby and has a big head. But he can get just about anywhere he wants.
  • DD isn't crawling or sitting . She just started rolling back to tummy(now she wont stop). Sometimes she'll try to pull her legs under herself. Sitting is coming soon because on the couch she can sit UA for a min. She has been pulling herself up to sitting for weeks.

  • We're nowhere close to crawling yet. It's hard to imagine that my first child was already crawling quite well and pulling up by now, and started cruising just a couple weeks from now, because this baby is so different. She doesn't even roll over. In fact, the stronger she gets, the better she gets at not rolling when I try to encourage her to do it (the little bugger!). I'm pretty sure she's a lot closer to "normal" than DD1 though.

  • LO can sit very well unassisted, loves to stand assisted or holding on to something but wont roll off her tummy! Lol. She makes funny crawling attemps but mostly does a good downward dog.

  • Ds rolls everywhere, no unassisted sitting and no crawling yet either! He realizes if he is laying down that means he can roll so the instant you sit him up he is arching his back to be laid down!
