Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Less frequent bowel movements?

My baby is 4.5 months old and this week her BMs aren't as frequent. She's breastfed and she used to go after each feeding and now it's a couple of times a day. It's currently 5 p.m. and she hasn't had one since last night around midnight (although she has had plenty of wet diapers). I've never breastfed before, so I don't know the patterns to look for - is this normal?

Re: Less frequent bowel movements?

  • I think so.  DS would go after every feed, now he only goes 2 to 3 times a day.  Usually morning, afternoon and dinnertime.

  • Totally normal to go days, even over a week in a breast fed baby with no bowel movements.

  • I have the same thing happening here.  Everyone has told me it's normal, but I was worried at first, too.

I'm SO glad you posted this question!! I noticed the same thing with my daughter at 4 months and wondered if it was normal. She pees a lot but at 4 months, her BMs went from 2-3 every day to 4-5 a week. She is mostly breastfed and also gets some formula. I'm so glad to see this is normal. Thanks for posting!

My ebf LO also had a big change in BMs around 4 months. He used to poop after every feed and then around 3 months started going 1-2 times per day. Now he goes 1-3 times per week! Your pedi could provide more info on this too. Yay for less poo-splosions!
This. And I really chuckled at "poo-splosions".

  • As long as LO doesn't seem to be in pain or struggling, pedi said "7 times in 1 day, or 1 time in 7 days" is normal!
