Reflux Moms - Bottles?

Hi moms! One of my twins has reflux and we're currently trying medication to help with the spit-up. Another mom suggested we try switching bottles as well, specifically to Dr. Browns. Do any of you have experience with these and if it helped your issues?

Also, I'm still breastfeeding, but supplementing with formula to provide enough for both twins. Right now, the girls breastfeed for 10-15 min and get a bottle of formula or breastmilk at each feeding. I've just been using the Medela bottles so far. They switch back and forth from breast to bottle great right now and I'm nervous about shaking things up, but I'll try anything to help with the reflux issue! Thoughts?

Re: Reflux Moms - Bottles?

  • My DS has some gas issues, and our pedi recommended switching from AVENT to DR Brown. It has helped some, but not tremendously. I don't like them as well as the avent bottles. What helped most was the drops of simethicone in the actual bottle instead of before/after the feeding.

    Best of luck!

  • My older DS had a pretty bad case of reflux and we used Dr. brown's-I never tried anything else so I don't have anything to compare it to, but the design of the bottle seemed to work for us. My newborn DS has some reflux symptoms as well (though it doesn't seem to be quite as bad as his brother-screaming for hours!), and so far we have given him two bottles of pumped milk since I am EBF, but the bottles seem to be working for him too.

  • We started with the playtex dropins and tried to switch to dr. browns at the recommendation of our pediatrician. DS hated the switch and refused to drink from the bottle so we had to switch back. We used Dr. Browns with DD when she was an infant, who has a diagnosis of GERD now, and they worked really well for her.

  • Thanks everyone. If you're breastfeeding, do you use the standard or wide base bottles from dr browns?
  • We use Playtex ventaire and dr browns and it doesn't make a difference, didn't for DS either. Meds don't usually stop reflux though, it inhibits the production of the acid.

  • I use avent but I bought a Dr brown bottle this week to see if it would help with the reflux. I didn't see any difference. Dr brown had a lot more pieces to it though, which was somewhat annoying.
