Kilz primer

Good afternoon ladies!! I need you all to talk me down from my freak out.

DH and I are renovating our house and used Kilz Original Primer in one area of subfloor to seal in odors (previous owners had cats). I was in the house and around the smell of Kilz for about 10-15 minutes before it got to me and I came outside.

Now I've been Googling and freaking myself out reading that pregnant women should stay away from Kilz because it causes birth defects! I'm normally a level headed person, but my pregnancy hormones must be running rampant today because now I'm freaking out thinking I breathed in toxic fumes that will hurt the baby.

Please tell me I'm crazy and need to calm my ass down!

Re: Kilz primer

  • Was it oil or latex based? Either way, you're fine. We used Kilz on our subfloors for the same reason. It was before I was pregnant, but the guy at Lowe's was telling us its safe as long as you have proper ventilation.

  • Loading the player...
  • Back away from the ledge....you're fine. When there are warnings it's for prolonged exposure with poor ventilation. Unless you smeared yourself in it or stuck your head in the bucket relax...carry on.

It was the oil based primer. I didn't see any huge warning label on the can regarding use by/around pregnant women, but google is scaring the crap out of me!

  • Thanks ladies. I left and did some shopping to let the house air out a little more and feel much better. DH thinks I'm crazy today!
