Moms who have flown- HELP!!

We are flying United.  With three kids.  With a less than an hour layover both ways.  Oh Lord, help me!

I want to bring both Emerys car seat and the stroller and gate check them.  It's a collapseable sit and stand type stroller, not a super compact umbrella.  I'm looking on the website and it says you can check either/or without baggage fees in addition to the baggage allowance.

Is there anyone who has flown with a gate checked car seat AND a stroller?  I'm trying to prepare myself for having to check the stroller before we get to the gate, which is fine, I just want to be clear in what to expect.  I'm just confused on what is allowed, since  there are 5 of us flying, all of us have one carryon, no checked baggage, and H might bring a backpack also.  '

HALP!

Re: Moms who have flown- HELP!!

  • Take em both all the way to the gate. When you get there, you go up to the desk and ask for a gate check tag for your stroller. Wait a few minutes. Then have your H go up and ask for a gate check tag for the car seat. I don't think they're going to give you any bs about paying for one of those items. They're usually way too busy at boarding to deal with it. If you're worried though, you & your H can board separately, each with a kid or two and one gate check item.

  • @shakinros, thank you!  That's kind of what I figured, and was hoping.  Another question:  We have a connecting flight- will the items we gate check be waiting for us as we get off the first plane and head towards our next plane?  Or will they transfer them and we pick them up at our final destination?

  • They'll be waiting for you as you get off the plane, I think? Better ask at the desk though. Sometimes airlines do it different way.

  • @scout2005, thank you!  I plan on asking if there in an extra seat available for the car seat but we didn't buy him one.  Did you put your kids FF or RF on the plane?

Also, we are bringing the kids backless boosters and gate checking them as well.  We are renting a car while there and the car seats are 60+ each to rent!  So we are bringing our own.  I wish we could bring them on the plane but I see on the United website we have to check boosters.

We are going to be a parade of insanity.

Everyone is going to hate us.

When you gate check you can ask to check them all the way through to your destination, or to get them at your layover. I always get them at the layover just in case, but if you only have an hour it might make sense to check them to your destination.

  • I always fly united. Tell them the stroller and carseat is two pieces and they'll say it's fine. I fly a lot by myself with Howell and never have had a problem.

If you guys look really pathetic, you get to line jump. I always do since I'm alone with a baby.

The carry on is a backpack and a small suitcase each except E since he doesn't have a seat. The ergo is my secret to success. Also nursing on takeoff and landing. GL. It's much easier than you think it will be.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I did. Most airlines will allow both the car seat and stroller free at gate check. I was able to take a diaper bag in addition to my carry on without charge as well. My advice... Get those red GATE CHECK bags. If you care anything for your seat/stroller. The amount of black grease that got on it was unbelievable. Not to mention what the other strollers looked like that were unprotected. It's worth it. Maybe you can snag a used one somewhere.

    Safe travels! GL!

  • I know you can get it at a Babies R Us or even Walmart or Target.  They run about $15. I was able to snag one on CL for $5. When will you be flying? I can send you mine... I have both the car seat and stroller. @gollywollypog

  • At one I forward face on planes in convertibles. Remember I am the one with a six ear old who rear faces. Dd1&2 and DS all have I pads. We use them strictly for travel, either by plane or car. We have been on a road trip for the last week. We will be back at the cabin late tomorrow. We started in southern Alberta on the fourteenth after finalizing the adoption of niece and nephew(DS).
