Chiropractic or Craniosacral therapy for Colic?

Today, my LC suggested trying craniosacral therapy and an infant chiropractor to help with DD's tummy troubles. LC's theory is that the antibiotics she was given at birth and the antibiotics I'm currently on for mastitis, the good bacteria in DD's belly are gone and those two things might give her some relief. She also suggested giving her Udo's Choice Infant pro-biotics.

She said the reason I may have mastitis is because DD favors the left side. She said DD might have a kink in her neck and that's why she won't latch too often on the right side.

Has anyone done either of these things? Did you have any success?

  • We did chiropractic with DS and I really didn't notice much of a difference. I was going to go again with DD but decided to ask my pedi first and she was very against it so we decided not to.

  • I am curious about this as well because DD has really bad colic. My chiropractor who worked wonders on my back during pregnancy is dying to get her hands on DD but DH doesn't approve. Our pedi suggested if we want to do something like this to go to an osteopathic MD who can make similar adjustments.

  • @MeenaJo Why was your pedi against it?

  • I did a couple of adjustments with DS when he was about 4 months old - more for sleep than anything. It was very, very gentle and I would be 100% comfortable trying it with DD. (It didn't really help with sleep, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.)

And I've got probiotics in the house already if DD gets cranky. I've read some really strong research in favour of probiotics for colic.

She said that there was no reason for spinal manipulation to be done on infants, that their spine is very pliable and does not need to be adjusted. She said it could be dangerous and cause more harm than good. She did say massage was fine but nothing other than that. There's a doctor in our town who does some sort of special tummy massage that supposedly works wonders. She is skeptical but said we could see him if we wanted to. DD isn't having any more issues so we haven't been.

  • I took our 10 week old to the chiropractor for a little colic.  Whenever I told people about how unhappy of a baby she was I heard the same thing.  "You should take her to a chiropractor?" She also had torticollis which is the kink in the neck thing.  Her kink was not that bad though, no feeding problems I just noticed she preferred to look to her right all the time. So the pedi was concerned she might get a flat spot. Our pedi suggested going to a PT and we are still waiting for a call from the PT to get in and that was 2 weeks ago.  In the meantime I have been to the chiro 4 times and her torticollis is much improved and she went from getting up 4-5 times at night to 1 time and this all happened in about 4 days. The chiro also suggested I take a probiotic to help her with a little of her upset tummy.  She has gone from a pretty unhappy baby at night to being able to fall asleep easily and stay sleeping for longer periods. I suggest it and what I like best is they didn't have to use drugs.  The pediatricians are so quick to just give drugs to solve problems but that's a whole other story.  Hope this helps your decision.
