Scout and other mamas of 2+

@scout2005, can you please explain to me the progression from sippy cup with nipple, to spout, to straw? When did your DD master these? We are still using the nipples with sippies because she doesn't do well with the spout yet. When should I get serious about all of this? Is it a big deal? She's 11.5 months.

This is a super exciting post. You're welcome.

Re: Scout and other mamas of 2+

  • When we moved to sippy cups we went to the soft spouts because they were similar to a nipple. Now he uses the hard spout sippy cups because I hate cleaning the straws. To get him to use a straw I just gave C sips of water out of a straw that I put my finger on at one end. That probably isn't very clear but it is what we do. When we go out to eat he drinks out of a kid cp with a lid and straw now.

  • We have some soft spouts but it seems like she chokes more easily with them. I guess I'll just keep trying.

  • I really don't think it's a big deal what kind they drink out of. DD2 did horrible with a regular sippy cup so I offered her a straw one and she tookme to that better.
I say just keep offering and she'll get the hang of it.

  • With Nene we started with bottles and completely skipped the soft spouts. She saw her cousin with a hard spot and went to that. On vacation we didn't have any bottles and she saw us drinking out of straws s so she drank out of it.
Amir went to soft spout then when I got tired of dealing with cleaning the spout I switched to hard spot. He cried a little but he got over it and drank pout of it. He sees his sister drinking pout if regular cups so he follows suit. Same with forks

  • We're on the soft sippy nipples also. (Nuk) It didn't seem to faze him too much. He knows HOW to drink from a straw, just doesn't much want to. One thing that seems to be helping with that is for him to see me drinking out of his straw cup (lollacup) and then he asks for it to drink out of himself.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. Aim to get her off bottles in the near future and then whatever kind of cup she likes, go with it. Straw, soft, hard, whatever. DS drinks out of all of the above. DD never took bottles but I'm still working on her with sippies. She will chew on the soft spout ones and then swallow what drips out. That's as far as we've gotten.
