Shush-Pat for Naps

The other day I was commenting that my LO had started crying when I put him down for naps. I was looking around online for advice and found this. It talks about holding your LO until he's calm and then doing this Shush-Pat technique when holding him as well as once you've laid him down. I gave it a try and it has totally worked for us for naps the last couple days and now my little guy doesn't cry when I set him in his crib. It worked for us, so I wanted to pass it on in case it could help someone else. Sorry its not a clicky!

  • My mom taught me this, only she does it on LO's bottom... she said she had to do it on her little brothers and sisters when she was young (oldest of 8), loooooong before the baby whisperer was around!!!!
    Totally works too

  • This works for DS some of the time.  He mostly loves the patting on his back.  He even gets droopy eyed when you are burping him.

How long did it take him to settle the first time? I have tried for about 40 minutes and he keeps crying so I pick him up and he falls asleep and I have been just repeating those steps with the shushing and patting. Is this what you did? Any suggestions?
  • Wow, I'm so glad you posted this! I usually swaddle him up and try rocking him to sleep laying down with a paci. It's been taking forever! Well today I sat upright with him like the article said and did the shush-pat. He fell deep asleep within 5 mins and has been sleeping for an hour and a half. It may just be a coincidence but who knows?!?

I think I had to pick him up once or twice the first time. The key for my LO is the patting on the back. He still always cries as soon as put him in the crib but if I turn him on his side and keep patting him (he doesn't care as much about the shooshing) he stops crying right away. Sometimes I put my other hand on his chest but it feels awkward after a couple minutes of doing that. I usually have to keep patting his back for 5-10 minutes before he falls asleep deep enough that I can stop patting him and slowly get his back on the crib mattress. Hope that helps!

Yay! I'm glad it worked at least once. When it worked for me the first time I thought, "Surely it can't be that easy of a fix" but a couple days later now its the only way I put him down for naps now.
  • Just tried this. DS seemed to hate being upright on my shoulder while swaddled. But he eventually calmed down and right now, he's asleep in his crib. Next time, I might skip the sitting "S" because that upset him more.

Daycare gave me the side-eye when I told them he usually only naps in my arms. Oops... hopefully this will help transition him to falling asleep on his own.
  • How the heck is everyone holding the baby upright, swaddled, into the chest/over the shoulder. I tried and LO doesnt have any 'bend' when he is swaddled and it is very awkward trying to hold him like that.

Ha! My LO sleeps swaddled with his arms out in one of those SwaddleMe blankets so he has a bit more bend. Even then I find myself switching shoulders often. I have the hardest time leaning into the crib trying to hold him to the side so I can pat his back..all while also shooshing! Each nap as I'm awkwardly bent over into his crib I think, "Really? Is this the only way you'll fall asleep?" It is so I keep doing it. Good luck over there!

  • I did it yesterday and It definitely made a difference. I was really skeptical but it's helped.
