1st Trimester

Teachers :)

I am a kindergarten teacher & return to work Monday. I have two questions for teachers:

1. If a parent/coworker asks if you are pregnant before you are ready to announce, what do you plan on saying? I really don't want to lie, but I'm not ready to announce either.

2. Morning sickness has finaly hit me hard. My classroom has no bathrooms and does not adjoin to other classrooms. What should I do if I get sick? I am not supposed to leave the kids alone in the classroom for obvious reasons , but I don't want to get sick in front of them, especially since it will increase my parents suspicions/questions?

Thank you for your input. I am so excited to be pregnant, but am terrified to mix school with the first tri. symptoms.

  • I also teach kindergarten! I am 13 weeks pregnant so I have told most of the staff at my school. I am not planning on telling parents until I am 18 weeks at curriculum night. If parents ask me before hand, I am going to tell the truth, but explain why I am waiting until curriculum night to announce. As far as getting sick, I don't know what to suggest for that. I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Good luck! Have a great school year!
  • I have told my team leader/best friend, but that's it. My principal doesn't know yet. I want to tell the principal at 12+ weeks and I can't tell parents before the principal.

Have a great school year too! :)

  • I'm a teacher. I told my principal, because we are great friends and I wanted someone to know just in case. If parents just flat out ask if you are pregnant that is VERY rude! I would think most people would just ask that in fear of offending a woman. People often ask me when we are having another baby and I just say "we've been talking about it". Just have things in your classroom that will help. I had TONS of gum and mints, water, juice, crackers, all things that helped me feel better. GL!
  • Unfortunately, I don't think my principal is goig to be super excited. :(

I didn't think to have crackers, mints, etc. in my classroom. Thanks for the tip.

  • Do you have a teacher whose classroom is nearby that could watch your room really quick if you don't feel well? I like the idea of keeping crackers and mints nearby.. water should help keep you hydrated too! Or take the kids on a bathroom break anytime you think you might get sick! :)

  • I also a teacher and have been thinking about this too. I think the best course of action would be to try and manage and prevent before you let it get the best of you. Keep some snacks and gingerale at your desk, buy some sea bands, and keep some lemon juice to add to water and stuff. That's what I am planning on doing--so far I haven't had issues with throwing up but it's still early so you never know what might come up! Hopefully if you can stay on top of your morning sickness, you may feel some queasiness but hopefully won't actually throw up at school. The book What to Expect When You're Expecting taught me that most nausea is caused or made worse by an empty stomach and snacks/small meals are the best way to keep nausea at bay. So a stock of snacks at your desk is crucial!

As far as parents asking about pregnancy, why would they? Most likely you won't be showing that much (and if you are, wear loose clothes) but it's very rude to ask someone if they are pregnant. So it they ask something that rude, I wouldn't feel bad about lying. But I doubt most people will notice.

  • I am not a school teacher, but I am a teacher and work with clients privately training them in pilates. I am also very stressed about getting sick at work because I do not want to announce yet. I am almost 8 weeks along. So far I have found that having mints, sour things (gummy worms), crackers, and trying to have a nibble of something about every 2-3 hours is helping. Also, I carry a bag with me almost everywhere I go now lol! Maybe you can keep some little baggies in your desk, mouthwash, and wipes? Do you have the kids 1/2 a day or for the full day? If they have "quiet time" that might be a good time for you to snack a little to try to manage things. Good luck to you and congrats on your baby!
  • I'm in your same boat. I bought lifesavers/granola bars/almonds for my desk & I'm also going to buy preggie pop drops this weekend.

  • I am nervous too! I teach 5th grade and cannot leave my students to run to the bathroom. We are going into the 2nd week of school.  I haven't gotten sick yet but I feel very tired and sometimes dizzy.  I feel like I am bound to barf in front of the children at some point!!  I guess there is nothing we can really do... except for hope that it all goes well!

*lurking*. I'm a teacher and if a parent asked if I was pregnant, I would say no. I don't really understand why they would ask you that anyway especially since you haven't told anyone... I think, because you are getting sick so often that you probably should let your principal know so that he/she can help you make arrangements if you get sick.

  • I'm a teacher too. No m/s yet (fingers crossed) but I know when my sil was pg and didn't want people to know yet, she just told one coworker she could trust who had a nearby classroom. That teacher could watch her class if she had to run out. GL!
  • Thankfully I have a bathroom in my classroom but if needed I would see if a teacher across the hall could keep an ear on your kids if you need to run to the restroom.  I would try Dramamine - it really helps with the nausea and is safe (according to my pharmacist) during pregnancy.  It might help you get through the day.  Pharmacies also sell these bracelets for nausea - I'm not sure what they are called but my friend swears by them.
  • In our school, two doors are next to each other, so if I had to really step out, I could ask another teacher to stand between doors. It has to be timed so that they aren't in the middle of instruction, but it works in a pinch.

I have had more of my coworkers and K students ask me if I'm pregnant than the parents. I just carried my weight in my stomach. That'll be good for this year since I just got my BFP - I can keep up the 'just fat' thing for awhile.
  • I'm a 5th grade teacher like another poster and am also concerned about that. My sister had super bad morning sickness, but luckily since it was summer, she could throw up in peace. We're entering week 3 of school and the only teacher bathroom is a long 2 minute walk (if I'm walking super fast) to the front of the school. Not entirely sure how I'll handle this if the need arises. FX I just feel sucky but don't throw up in front of them.
