Car seat question..

Hey everyone!
I have, like most of you, had my DD in a convertible car seat in rear facing. She is 31 inches tall and looks like she is getting cramped. The law in my state is only one year but it is recommended that they remain rear facing for 2. What are you doing with your LO?

I'm keeping DS RF at least until 2. He doesn't fuss about it too much, and from what I have read it is a whole lot safer to keep them RF for as long as possible. I think it was the phrase "internal decapitation" that scared me into wanting to wait a while.

DS's convertable seat is giant and tall and he's small, so his toes just graze the backseat. But he still goes in his infant seat in DH's car. He's right near the limit so we really need to get another convertable, but he's still okay for now. In that seat, he just sits cross legged, bends his knees, or props his feet up on the back seat.

I imagine he'll do the same in the convertable as he gets bigger. I'm keeping him rearfacing forever!

Well, until the limits of the seat anyway. And he's so tiny, I don't think we'll have any problem making it until 4.

Wow, 3 or 4?!

I did turn her around so she was ff once, but she's currently rf again. I'll prob turn her around between 18 and 24 months.

Might be hard to see but here is my almost 3yo - his head is at the top of the shell so he's forward facing but still sits with his legs crossed most of the time.

DD will stay RF until 2 or reaches the limits (I bet height before weight just like DS).

If your seat has those extra padding inserts (for infants) you can remove them - just check your manual. That might help.

Yeah DS is 18lbs and 30in. Not that small, but fairly petite. He measures the exact same as DH did at the same age. DH didn't hit 30lbs until he was almost 4. If DS stays on the same trajectory, I wouldn't be comfortable turning him FF even at 2. His convertable does RF until 45lbs so he'll be RF for a looooong time.

I'll keep her RF until she hits 40lbs probably, as that's the RF weight limit of her seat and she's a hefty girl already. My 3 1/2 year old complains about her legs dangling and "feeling funny" (I presume they're falling asleep?) in her FF seat and if I had the option to RF her I would (she's in a FF only seat) As it is, she's always sitting with her legs crossed anyways, out of comfort.

They can just fold their legs up. DS was rear-facing until nearly 3, we turned him around when we installed DD's carseat last summer, because we couldn't fit 2 seats RF (unless both front seats were pushed all the way up). We plan to keep DD RF until at least 2 years. Now that we've told DS that DD stays RF until she is 2, there is no way he would let us turn her around sooner!

I agree with this. if he's cramped do the old criss cross apple sauce, RF should be maditory till age 2 minimum in all states but sadly it's not. We will RF until DS hits weight limit and since he is really little, 18lbs6oz 29inches long, he will probably RF past 2 years and I am totally fine with that

My son who typically has been over the 100% for height comfortably RFed until after 3. I only turned him as it was difficult to help him into the seat w/dd. (he as big feet that would get stuck on each other). I plan to RF dd to as close as 4 as possible as that is when it is safest to turn them (has to do w bones fusing in their neck). In countries like Sweden the kids RF until 4/5 and have much fewer injuries and deaths than we do. (They have different carseats that allow them to do so).

We're also planning to RF as long as possible - we have a Radian, so he should be able to RF until at least 3, hopefully closer to 4.

I noticed when some people have larger cars like and SUV or the like and have those larger seats they fit longer. Do you think that's why some of you can have you LOs rear facing until 3? I have a small car and the graco my size 70. I just don't see how my DD could be RF for THAT long

We'll RF as long as possible. DD will outgrow the height before weight I'm sure... she wasn't anywhere near the weight limit for her infant seat but outgrew the height (30 in) at about 1. Her feet do touch the back but she doesn't seem to mind it. So, yeah. I'm fine with keeping her RF for as long as it works for the seat.

We have a radian in our taurus and a saftey first 70 in our tahoe and are planning on RF until he outgrows either the height or weight limit whichever comes first. He will be RF and long as possible!
