Breastfeeding

I need help

My LO is 6 days old and breastfeeding is going just absolutely horrible. I finally got into a breastfeeding clinic today where we worked on latching and correct positioning. The problem is my nipples are completely wrecked. They are raw, cracked, and bleeding. Every time he goes to latch on the pain is indescribable. I was crying earlier because it hurt so much. I got a prescription for Bacriban and I'm supposed to apply it throughout the day. But how are my nipples supposed to heal when my baby is constantly nursing? I want to give up so badly but I know if I do I will regret it. Has anybody been in this position? How do you get past the pain?

I was the same way. I would sob every time lo latched.... I threatened to quit daily...

Smoothies Jel pads were the best, purple box company lanolish or something....got them at walmart. You use them for 72 hours and can refridgerate them. I have no idea what they have in them but they made a huge difference! I bought three boxes and used them all.

My turning point was about 10 to 14 days then things improved rapidly. Now at seven weeks and bf is going well.

  • I had cracks, blisters and hickies. It all went away in about 2 weeks. Good luck, the end is near! Don't give up until a month. That's what everyone told me, of course I did an eye roll, but now LO is 6 weeks old and I understand what they meant. Good Lu k!
  • they will heal. it is normal.

keep up the good work mamma! it will pay off soon!!!

  • I'm sorry you are dealing with this.  I went through this as well with LO.  The pain is toe-curling, eye wincing... it is horrible.  I dreaded every feeding.  I found the only relief was going topless, the air really helped, and just not having something up against my nipples was nice.  Also, switching up positions!  I alternated between football and cradle for the most part.  That way which ever area was cracked would get some extra time to heal.
I am not positive when block feeding is recommended, but you could look into that as well.  It would give each nipple longer in between feedings.
I noticed by the 2 week mark it was getting more tolerable.  By 1 month, I was comfortable nursing.  Now 10 months out, I am still nursing and don't have an end in sight.  I had planned on a year, but I am open to going through 18 months now.  Taking it one day at a time!
Hang in there mama, it gets better!
