Success after IF

Facial rash only...

hi ladies-

so DS has had super sensitive skin for a long time now (funny since DD is much fairer skinned) and we've taken all of the proper precautions: dye free fragrance free detergent, cutting and filing his nails for less scratching, watched for foods he may seem sensitive too, etc. A while ago his rash was ridiculously bad all over his face and the pedi gave us a script for a steroid cream Desodyne. It worked for a while and we stopped after a few weeks since thats the suggested time frame.

The day before their 6 month appt we went to the grocery store and there is a nylon/poly strap on our cart cover - DS had it in his mouth and immediately got a rash on his nose, upper lip and chin and part of his cheeks. The doc was totally stumped. She said a poly/nylon sensitivity is very rare. But she just said to keep monitoring it and to call her if it ended up being bumpy or sores. We've done our best to keep anything fabric was going into his mouth which is REALLY hard. Consider all the bibs and toys that are poly/nylon mix - I bet you don't even realize it. Even their pottery barn sheets are poly so i bought a cotton one yesterday to try out and also removed the bumper on his crib since he has his face on that a lot. i am just super frustrated - i know it sounds vain and i don't mean it to - but he constantly has this upper lip rash and chin and nose and it just looks awful. babies are also in a wedding this weekend and i just feel so bad for him because he's a beautiful little boy (i know i know, even with the rash!) but it just looks painful like a little rugburn. any suggestions or experience? i don't want to call the pedi again because i'm really not sure what she can do beyond this point. i am pretty positive this is not a food allergy as we've eliminated any possibility of that. could it be a teething or drool rash? i'm at my wits end. thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: Facial rash only...

  • sorry meant to add that i'm confused also because this is a facial rash only. but considering he's in PJ's or clothing most of the time would that attribute to the fact that he doesn't have a body rash?

  • I dunno he could just be sensitive to anything really on his skin. I am super sensitive to everything and DS I have to make sure his face is super clean after eating anything. He always breaks out anywhere there are little food spots on his face or if anything else has touched him. So he basically has constant little bumps all over his cheaks and around his mouth and chin. I guess they will grow out of it eventually. The only thing I can put on his face when it get's really bad is aquafur and that is it because any other lotions will break him out. Even if he has a pacifier and hes teething a ton he gets broken out. So no clue

  • I agree with cinciem! We went through the same thing with DS and he had horrible what we would call "punch mouth". All around his mouth was red and raw. It would periodically clear up and then pop back up worse than ever. Turns out it was most likely due to drool and hands in the mouth and on the face. Try to keep it as dry as possible and then put aquaphor on it. The good news is he'll grow out of it, the bad news is aquaphor may help but won't cure it.
