Special Needs

Looking for some advice. A little long TIA

Most of this I will copy and paste from my birth month board, it was posted yesterday in a rush so it might seem kind of scattered so I apologize now for that.

Before that though I will introduce my self. My name is Casey, I am a mom of 2 with a third on the way with in the next couple if weeks.

My oldest will start first grade Monday and currently has a DX of ADHD and ODD. Currently being evauled for Asbugers. With this testing we decided to start all the way over and begin fresh as if he has never been DX'd with anything. (he still has the DX of the ADHD for school purposes). He currently holds a 504 with this school (no testing with the school, but did have an IEP with a previous school in which he did have some testing- his original DX came from visits with mental health providers, one who specializes in kids as well. Ds1 also have an eye focusing an tracking problem that is being addressed. His eyesight is not to bad otherwise.

For ds2 I will copy and paste from yesterday

Duck 2 had his evaluations for development today. I did not except to get the results that we got. As you can see he is almost 4 but at a development level as a 24 month old. With this info he will be enrolled into the program as well as into Speech Therapy, Occp. Therapy, and physical therapy. He starts next week. Their goal is to get him caught up and ready for when it is time for Kindergarten.

Also along with this testing they dx'd him with ADHD, and will be doing testing on pain tolerance. They believe he has a very high pain tolerance, which can cause some major issues. Something that is concerning is the first thing they did is reaction to sound, they made a nose directly behind him with a sound stick and most kids will turn towards the noise. He had no reaction at all none. They tested his hearing which was perfect. This is something they have not seen before, so they are trying to figure out the best course of action. It could be a brain misfire, it could be him just totally ignoring it. As this point they do not know.

Ds2 also has eye issues with focus and tracking and eye crossing, his sight is very poor. He can not see things in front of him (has learned to adapt though because everything is very blurry the eye doc showed me a picture of how he sees and I had no clue what I was looking at) he had has 1 surgery already and will have at least 2 more.

Btw the school he will be attending is designed just for SN children because my state/ or area does not offer a public preschool program. They also work with the families to help them cope and learn as a family.

Now with all of that said DH is taking it kind of hard and I am not sure in what to say to him. He is afraid that soon to be Ds3 will have problems as well. (Ds3's eye site will tested at birth and once a month for the first year because the eye issues with the others can be passed down). DH thinks that he has caused this somehow. I do not know what to say other than some children just need extra help and there is nothing he did for our kids to have any type of SNs. What else can I say? Can someone direct me to websites that I can show him that he did not do anything to cause this?

Any other advice or thoughts or concerns and things I can or shouldn't be doing would be most appreciated. I am open to a lot of opinions and help!

Please excuse my spelling/ grammar typing. I have to post from my phone because lap tips decided no to charge today.

There was a time when kids with Aspergers were commonly misidentified as having ODD or ADHD based on their behaviors. ADHD is a very common comorbid to ASD- see the thread I posted earlier about the two. ODD is possible but much less likely.

What was he classified under on his old IEP? Did your current district honor the previous school's IEP while they did their own eval as required by IDEA?

FYI- a lot of kids with Aspergers have glitches that make crossing the midline a challenge. More often it's noticed when a kid can't/won't cross their body when doing something like writing, but it can impact vision and the eyes working together sometimes.

Going forward, it is unlikely you will get an Aspergers dx. The condition is no long recognized by the APA or included in the DSM-5. Newly dx'd people who present like Aspergers get dx'd with autism or ASD. This isn't a reflection of where he is on spectrum, it's new language.

It's a little unusual to dx a kid under 6 with ADHD, but I'm seeing it more. If it helps get services in place that is a good thing.

and will be doing testing on pain tolerance. They believe he has a very high pain tolerance, which can cause some major issues.

A high tolerance for pain is sometimes related to sensory processing glitches seen with ASDs. DS has this, he once got a large second degree burn on his thigh as a toddler and was playing as if nothing was wrong within minutes. Other times he'd be at the doctor for a well check and they'd discover an acute case of OM. Sometimes it is associated with intellectual disability; although it could be that some are not effectively communicating their pain.

I've heard of kids doing this in testing. Sometimes kids on spectrum lack the natural curiosity that would drive most kids to check for the source of the sound. This used to be one of the differences stated between kids who got an Aspergers dx and those who got HFA- the lack of curiosity. Sometimes a kid with ADHD is hyperfocused on something else and will tune out all else.

Ds2 also has eye issues with focus and tracking and eye crossing, his sight is very poor. Sounds like a great resource for your family. It's great that your DS will be landing there.

A lot of parents react as your DH is- taking on blame when it's just that your kids have been dealt a difficult hand. There probably isn't anything you can do or say to disavow him of this line of thought except to point out that ruminating on fault is pointless when there are kids who need his help to be their best selves. Maybe someone on one of your sons' teams could address this with him.

Ds1's IEP was listed as other services (if I am remembering correctly). The new school (new state) did not accept the IEP but gave 504. I posted about this before I think. They did not do testing though and I feel like they really dropped the ball. This is why I reached out to his pedi. Which btw is very involved with him and getting him referrals out to spec. The psychologist did say that he does not think that the ODD dx was correct either. This is why we decided to start fresh. I am off to read your earlier post that you suggested. Oh as far as the school I was not sure how to handle things last year but you better believe that I have an appointment with them for Monday and we will be going over everything and I am not leaving till we have a plan in place.
