Digestion Issues & Probiotics?

My heart breaks for LO with all his gas pains, runny stool, and now, he's even got what we think are anal fissures, causing a little bit of bleeding when he poos. :(
He's already on Zantac for the silent reflux. Now we're going to start using aquaphor. If that doesn't help in a few days, Doc said to bring him back in, and we'd discuss Milk Protein Intolerance. I'm vegan, so I doubt that's it... but I wouldn't be shocked if he had soy protein issues. I eat soy every day. (Who doesn't though? It's in everything!)
I emailed today to ask about using proiotics. I'm hoping that will do the trick. Anyone else using them? If so, what brand and is it helping?
I just want him to feel better!

Re: Digestion Issues & Probiotics?

  • We use the Bio Gaia (now Gerber Soothe) for my 12 week old son and love it. Got it from Walgreens. I think it has helped tremendously with his gas and colic symptoms. His poo is also healthier looking now that he takes daily probiotics.

  • We give my DS the Gerber Sooth. They seem to help. He's also on Nexium for reflux and I'm dairy and soy free.

Soy is in everything, but much of it is oil and lecithin, which are fats, and should have very little or no soy protein content.

  • We use biogaia (now the gerber soothe). They're really easy to give on a little spoon. We use them because he had a lot of antibiotics as a newborn, so I'm just making sure his gut bacteria is healthy. They did make a difference in his stooling patterns though - much healthier (used to be too loose). I'm also dairy free. I think kellymom says that a high percentage of dairy sensitive babies also have a soy issue, so may be worth a try.

  • LO is going through something similar. I'm vegan also, and was eating a lot of soy so the pedi suggested cutting it out along with nuts. He said food intolerances can often cause reflux issues too (C is on prevacid). I was eating a lot of soy, so its been an adventure planning meals! Keep us posted cuz I'd like to know how someone in a similar situation is doing!

  • We just started using Gerber Soothe probiotics today. It may be too soon to tell, but DD has been in Nutramigen hypoallergenic formula for two days and probiotic for one and hardly cried or spit up today at all. Amazing for us!

  • We've been using probiotics for a few months now.  I think our brand is Nature's Way.  It's a powder that we mix into a bottle of breast milk  (along with the multivitamin his pedi recommends) for his motn feeding.  It mixes easily and we like it.
