Babies: 3 - 6 Months

rolling dilemma

I have read it's safe to leave a baby who has rolled on to his belly during sleep when he knows how to roll front to back. What do you do if he can only roll one way? Last night I was able to get him onto his back without waking him but I'm sure it was a fluke. Also, how soon after learning to roll back to front did your lo start rolling the other way? Thanks!

Re: rolling dilemma

  • I've read and been told by a public health nurse (at a child care center I worked at) that no matter what you should always be putting them on their back to sleep up until they are 1. Granted I say this and as I try to put my LO on his back to sleep he immediately rolls to his side every time.

  • Oh yes I ALWAYS put him down on his back! I'm just wondering if you roll him to his back when you find him on his belly in the middle of the night.
  • Our peditrician told us that if lo rolled to his belly on his own that it was ok to leave him even if he could only roll one way. She said he was strong enough to lift his head at that point and turn it if he needed to.
  • Thank you! I can't wait for his 4 month check up. It's next week.
  • This really concerned me with DD1 too. I spent a few nights rolling her back and then trying to get her back to sleep...no fun. My pedi said there's not much you can do to keep them on their backs if they roll. Like PP, my pedi said that if baby can roll, baby is strong enough to lift his head.
