Maternity pics

My cousin is a photographer and offered to do our maternity pics. She asked the other day when I wanted to do them. I'm 23w now and am wondering how long I should wait. When are you doing them or how far a long where you when you did?

Re: Maternity pics

  • I'm so glad that you asked this question, because I also was wondering what other people thought. Our aniversary is on October 6 (1 year!!) and I was going to try to do the pictures then so they would be kind of like 1 year and maternity pictures. Although from what I've been reading, It almost seems like I should be doing them earlier. Thanks for starting this post!

  • PP: October 6th is pretty early unless you are due at the beginning of December. I would do it between 32 and 36 weeks. That way you are nice and big but you aren't likely puffy everywhere (especially the face) yet. Around here, many photographers recommend taking them in this time frame.

  • ☺ Agreed I'm waiting til November.
  • My photographer also said 34-36 weeks. I'm having mine done the last weekend in October as she is 4hrs away and don't want to make that drive in November.
  • On most photography sites in my area they say between 27-33 weeks.
  • I'll be 32 weeks at mine.

  • These responses seem later than I would have thought. I still want to be skinny and cute with a basketball bump and no stretch marks for the photos (wishful thinking?). I think I am running out of time for those. I had planned on doing it soon between week 26-29.

  • I'm due December 10th and my photographer had me schedule for October 7th.
  • I'll probably have them done around 33 weeks.
  • I'm due Dec 12th, but mine are scheduled for Sept 28th. That's a lot earlier than I actually wanted to do them, but my photographer had to fit me in. I'm hoping she will have a cancellation and get me in later in the fall.

We have the exact same anniversary - and are celebrating one year too :D

  • I haven't scheduled mine yet but do you guys mind me asking around how much you'll be paying for them? I want to do nice pictures but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for them. Thanks and sorry for hijacking your thread!
    My pictures are $200.
  • Our photographer is a friend of ours, he is only charging us $50 for the session. He normally charges about $100-150 per session. It really depends on the area that you are in as well. I'm in South Georgia, so the prices are going to be a little less than in a major city. We are lucky to have our guy, he did our wedding pictures for free as a gift!
  • I think I'm gonna try for the beginning/middle of next month so I can use some of the pictures for thank you cards after my baby showers.

  • I don't think I am going to get pics done.
I just don't have the courage to be half naked in front of a camera with a big belly.

With DD we did them at 34 weeks. With these, I'll be 29 weeks. I don't want to be as big as a house in them.

EDIT: We are paying $650, but that includes maternity and newborn sessions along with 15 digital files of each.

With ds we did them around 32 weeks, it was great timing since it was the beginning of Spring and everything was just blooming. We had our friend take photos of us with our camera at a park that sits on a river. They came out very nice. This time I'm thinking we'll do them in the beginning of October at the same location. With fall just starting we should get some beautiful photos. ETA: That would put me around 31 to 32 weeks.
    Little one is here.

Just do them fully clothed. That's what I did.

  • My due date is December 24th - I am 21 weeks.   I have scheduled my maternity pics for September 13.  This is much earlier than when I did them for my DS - I think I was 30 weeks for my first set of maternity pics.   That being said - I am much bigger this second time around, AND much more uncomfortable.   I don't think it matters, you just need to look pregnant enough, but still be comfortable to move around freely and pose.   If stretch marks are an issue, you might want to have the photos done before they start to appear aswell - unless your photographer plans to edit them out, or if you plan to leave them :)
  • I'm not having "maternity" pictures done, by baby #3 i know what I look like pregnant lol and simple everyday candid work for me! But we will do family pictures in the fall i'll be around 35 wks then. My family are not huge fans of them, but I usually like to do family ones once a year and sometimes another session later in the year of just the kiddos...

You don't have to be half naked. There are plenty of beautiful clothes images. Just remember, if you take then and don't like them, then you never have to look at them again, but if you don't take them, you can never go back!
  • As a professional photographer, my recommendation to my clients is that they do them when their belly is nice and round and out past their boobs. This can come at different times for each woman especially if it is not their first baby. I do however recommend that they do them by 34 weeks at the latest just in case they go into labor early and also before they would get too big and uncomfortable.

Unfortunately I'm still only 23w and my belly has been bigger than my ginormous boobs for quite some time. Thanks for the insight.
