Old mom young mom

Do you consider yourself an "old" "young" or "average" age mom? How old are you? How do others view you?

Re: Old mom young mom

  • I consider my self average, at least compared to all the other moms at daycare.  I think other people think I am a young mom.  I am 26.

  • I'm 35 and I feel average to older. Because of my work and my look I always get "you are so young". However I hardly get carded any more so I feel like I look mid to late 20's which I don't think is "so young" to have kids.

  • I'm 28, and I definitely LOOK young. Most other moms I've known in the different places we've lived have always been a few years older, so I guess I'm considered a young mom. I don't feel like 28 is young, but I did have my first at 25, which I think is fairly young.

  • I feel average.  Most of the moms I hang out with are older...but I still feel average.  I'm 29

  • I'll add that when I'm out with both kids, sometimes I get looked at and I feel like people are judging me. Heaven forbid I forget my wedding rings, then I feel like those looks are pure pity.

  • I feel like a young mom at times. Most of the women I know that have kids are older than me. I'm 28, but I had my first at 22. Not to mention, I still look young. No one really believes me when I tell them I'm 28.

I am basically a teen mom where I live (NYC). Most first time moms I know are 33 or older.
    ETA I'm 27, turning 28.

  • I feel young, but after reading everyone's age, it made me realized that I am on the "old" mom group.  I am 33.

  • Average - 30. A little young for my peer group but old compared to the average nationwide which I think is 26 for a FTM.

  • I guess I was considered an old mom- I was 36 when I had LO..i'm from NY we have kids late:)

  • I would consider myself average.  I'm 28.  But only a couple of my friends have kids, so that makes me feel like the old one of the group.

I am 30 and I would say average to older. Most families around here are blended families including myself. I have two stepsons who are 7 and 8 so I probably look like a crazy lady when I have all three.
  • Average, I'm 28. I look young so when I'm out alone with the baby I feel judged sometimes.

  • wow, it's funny how averages are so different based on where you live!  I'm in a Baltimore/DC suburb and I had DD1 two months after turning 31, and DD2 at 34.  I'd say I'm about average. I've always found myself right around the same age as all the other mothers at daycare.

Average. I was 33 when LO was born. None of my friends have had children under 30. Among people I work w I'm on the younger side

I imagine @hilsy85 is totally considered a teen mom here in NY

My SD is about to turn 8 and when I take her places w parents of her friends I feel so out of place bc I'm often 10+ years younger than the parents.

  • I'm 27 I think I'm about average. A lot of my high school and college friends are having kids now. I'm constantly seeing announcements on Facebook.

  • I actually think I am young/average and I am 32.  My friends in NYC are just starting to have kids.  I was the first!  I had to go out and solicit new "mom friends."  Of course now I have no time/energy for friends -- "mom friends" or otherwise -- but that is another post.

  • Depends on the crowd I'm in.  A lot of my friends here are in PhD programs, so I am only one of a few people I know who have kids at all.  So I feel young.  I also kind of feel that way when I drop Henry off at daycare, as it seems many of the other parents of infants are older than me.  However, if I were to go back home and hang out with my high school crowd friends (no thanks), I would probably be the oldest person with an infant by far.

    I'm 28.

  • I'm on the younger end...I turned 23 last week:)

  • I was 31 when K was born. This is old for our group of friends as most have kids in elementary now, but we didnt feel ready for a baby before this stage of our lives. We also finished college, bought a house, traveled and settled into our careers before starting a family. I do not feel like an old mom at all.
  • I'm young, 25 as of March. I feel young because only like 2 people in our 'group' of friends have kids, and they weren't planned, so we get a lot of flack for "ruining" our youth and getting "boring". Whatevs. I wanted kids young so I had them young.

I was going to say something very similar to Ziegeflicker: depends on what circle I am in. (We both have Henrys, too!)
I'm 34 with my first baby which feels old for the community I live in where most people my age have elementary aged children, but if I look to my friends from college I am right on track with those PhDs having babies. Unfortunately, I do not have my own phd.
I do have the cutest baby, though! (Kidding)

There is always going to be a huge connection betweeb education and maternal age. That's why the age of having kids is going up (one of them). Women are getting advanced degrees, etc. so...later kids.

And PhD's are for chumps ;)

  • Everyone thinks they look young but mambo :)

I think people just don't know how old people look, lol

  • @ThisIsBrea: I think you look young. And HOT. And I got back on the computer just to tell you that ;-)

Starry: I really do look young. Without makeup I get crazy looks, on my 25th birthday the waitress at dinner would not believe I was 25, she thought I was 19 apparently. It does not help that I'm only 4'6''.

  • WTF Bump, posting before I was ready. Anyway. I got asked if I was a teen mom here:

Tee, thank you! That was about 4 months ago her first time at the zoo! You can tell how enthused she was. LOL. @LauraT25

@bettyandco it has to be just because you're short. People don't think adults can be short apparently we should all grow once we hit 20. Haha I wish.
I agree! It must be the height lol I was like "uhh... I'm here with my husband and oh wait I'M MARRIED?!" Baffles me. Every.time.

But I know I look ratchet without makeup. Which is 95% of the time. I'm okay with that. Ha.
  • I think it is the comments that bother me. You are right people are horrible at guessing ages. So keep your mouth shut. Who cares if you are a teen or 40 years old. You busy body are just guessing at my age. Not sure to be flatter because I look young or insulted because I look like an incomponant mom.

  • I'm 26, 27 on the 31st. I look young for my age. I don't have any friends with little ones the same age as Bailey. My SD's (9yo) classmates' and teammates' moms are all older than me. Most in their 40's. We dropped SD off at school for her first day of kindergarten a few years ago and I got asked if I was a student there!! And of course MIL was there and just thought it was hilarious. She's brought it up at least 20 times since.

  • I'm 36 and kinda average, kinda old around my friends. DH is 43, so he's old for a FTD. I cannot imagine having a child when I was younger, or in relationships other than DH. We'd like to have a second, so it will be tricky to juggle the age gap we want with my age. (Want a bigger gap, but want to have second baby before I'm 40. )

  • I'm not sure what to think of myself..maybe an average mom? I'm 31, had my first son 10 days after my 17th birthday. He's 14 now and 6ft tall! Then I had my 2nd at 19, my 3rd at 22 and had LO last year at 30. I'm DONE.
