Paint colors

Since there are so many of us that have just moved or are moving soon, I was hoping to find out your painting plans. My old house was very choppy with bright red, grass green, orange, and tan. I'd love to have a home that flows but still has a bit of color.

What colors are in your home?

  • My entire house is that boring beige with white trim used by new home builders. Seriously need to hire a decorator.

  • Our living room is a milk chocolate color. The front entry, hallways (upstairs and down), and stairwell are a light taupy color called "mid-day mocha". Our dining room is a burnt orange on the top half, and the bottom half is cream wainscoting. I think everything in those areas flows pretty well even though the colors are different because they shades are similar in intensity. There is also a sun porch off the living room that we painted a super light blueish green (Barely Jade) that looks really nice next to the deep brown of the living room. The only room area on the main floor that we didn't paint is the kitchen/family room area. It's currently a light blue, but we're hold off on painting that for now because we want to decide on new flooring and counter tops before choosing a color.

The bedrooms upstairs are a dark blue gray with a white chair rail (master), a sage green in one guest room, a rose-gray guest room, and a bright pale aqua in DS's room.

Maybe try to stick to a similar palette - say all warm tones or cool tones that go well together but don't necessarily match each other.

Moosebaby, most of your colors are ones I was considering. I really want a darker blue-gray in the living room, kitchen, dining room. It's all open so I was thinking 1 wall in that color and the rest in beige so it wasn't so over powering.

I have such a hard time deciding based on Pinterest because all the photos have white trim and we will have wood colored trim. I'm not sure the colors will still look good.

I know it's just paint, but I know that once it's done I'm not going to re do it if I don't like it.
  • Hmmm... with natural wood trim I'd probably go with a warm palette. I think it coordinates better with most wood tones. The exception for me would be super dark wood like an espresso or dark cherry finish. That can go either way.

  • Ours has a lot of natural wood as well ... can't go wrong with wood in any shade...  From there, we've got golden-yellow (muted), rust, sage, then the bedrooms are coffee-pink, blue, violet...

  • I won't be too much help, as our house is a hodge podge of color. Like a pp, I grew up with all white walls and HATED it. So our old house and the new one is covered in color! Dh likes modern, bright decor and I'm into the rustic, primitive, so to compromise, our downstairs is primitive, with tan colors in both living rooms, entryway, bathroom, and part of the kitchen and our dining room and laundry room is a deep red. Upstairs is a whole different story. It's tan around the staircase, then the playroom is painted with a blue sky and green hills and farm animals, one bathroom is dark grey, one is silver grey and deep teal, our bedroom is turquoise, the guest bed is deep blue, and the boys bedroom is done half black and half red for a corvette theme. Nothing really matches, per se, but I love it. Every room is different and that's the way I like it! I say go for whatever you like!
